For the first unit of the year, students will be focusing on memoir writing (an autobiographical account of a specific memory that results in a change or transformation). First, students will read mentor texts of memoir to learn valuable techniques to improve their writing. Then, they will have the opportunity to draft, revise, and edit their own memoir. Their summative grade will be based on the final draft of their memoir, which will be due at the end of the unit.
