The role the school counselor plays in students in academics (in middle school) is helping students succeed in school and prepare for post-secondary options. This includes but is not limited to individual, small group, and large group counseling (time-management, study skills, anxiety related to academics, etc.). Also planning the career fair and connecting student with resources such as online tutoring, peer tutoring, and additional resources.
Small Group: school counselor meets with (ideally) 4-6 students to discuss with specific focus with the goal of connecting with peers, learning from each other, and receiving targeted support for their specific needs for a specified amount of time (usually 6-8 weeks, once a week.
Through the Gwinnett County Public library students can access FREE online tutoring.
If you have tried multiple interventions and you feel like your child's needs are beyond tutoring, etc. and needs additional help (supports, accommodations)?
Talk to your child's pediatrician
Consider requesting a Student Support Team (SST) meeting to explore whether your child could be better served and supported by a 504 or IEP (Special Education)
