What is the Big 5?
Reading is made up of 5 essential skills; Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Fluency, Vocabulary, and Comprehension. According to the article "The National Reading Panel and The Big Five" by the Orton Gillingham Online Academy "The foundation of reading is Phonemic Awareness. Phonemic awareness is the understanding that all spoken words are made up using a subset of about 44 individual sounds, called phonemes. Mastery of the skill of phonemic awareness has to be to the point of automaticity in order for fluency to be developed. On top of this comes systematic Phonics. Children learn that the sounds in spoken words relate to the patterns of letters in written words. Not just mastery of the skills of systematic phonics, but automaticity in those skills, is also necessary for fluency to develop. With these two layers in place and developed to the point of automaticity, techniques to improve Fluency can begin to be effective. Vocabulary Development can be built next, including learning the meaning of new words through direct and indirect instruction, and developing tools like morphemic analysis, to discover the meaning of an unknown word. Then Comprehension Skills can be added. Comprehension skills are the strategies a reader can use to better comprehend a text."

This is an interactive website for kids to use to break up the sounds of words. The website allows kids to add up to 5 syllables. I would use this in a center rotation. These can also be printed out and used with dots.

This website is full of games for students that are focused on the letters of words. From games to spelling it is great for centers.
Fluency
Fluency
This is a teacher resource that give teachers ideas about how to improve their fluency. It is has lesson plans for each of the activities and all grade levles.
Vocabulary
Vocabulary
Full of all differnet games for studnets to play. There is a lot of different games that focus on different vocabulary topics. There are speaking, typing, etc. games for all students to play.
Comprehension
Comprehension
There is many different topics that you can go to that would help with Comprehension. Each topic has a variety of different activities to do with students for all grades. It is a teach resource, but it is made for them to use with students.
