Kentaro Fukumoto's Homepage

I'm a professor of political science at the University of Tokyo, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics.

My research interest lies in political methodology: design-based approach (causal inference, in particular, natural experiment) and model-based approach (statistical modeling, especially using duration analysis and copula functions).

Substantive topics I have tackled are elections and legislation, among others. While many of my works study Japan, I also delve into American politics, comparative politics, and international relations data.

My articles are published in political science journals (such as  American Journal of Political Science, American Political Science Review, Journal of Politics, and Political Analysis) and other discipline outlets (e.g., Journal of the American Statistical Association, Nature Medicine).

I graduated from the University of Tokyo, Faculty of Law, in 1995. Skipping graduate school, I became a research associate at the University of Tokyo, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics in 1995. I obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Tokyo in 2007 by submitting a dissertation. From 1998 to 2024, I taught at Gakushuin University. I was a visiting scholar at Harvard University (2003-2005) and Washington University in St. Louis (2014-2015).

I am an editor of Japanese Journal of Political Science and an editorial board member of Political Analysis and Asian Journal of Comparative Politics.
