Information as of 8/25/2020
Synchronous Learning: A learning event in which a group of students are engaging in learning at the same time. The teacher and students are committing to being on an online video platform at the same time and the teacher is typically facilitating the actions of the class.
Asynchronous Learning: A learning event in which a group of students are engaging in learning with teaching materials and tools not necessarily in the same place (virtual meeting) or same time. The teacher will be responsible for being available to the students via an online video platform during the scheduled class time, but students are not required to be in attendance on the video platform at all times.
Rodriguez Middle School will be required to take DAILY attendance under both learning models. This means students will have to be present in-person and/or logged in each day to be counted present for credit purposes.
Per Texas Education Code (TEC) 25.092, students must attend 90 percent of a course (with some exceptions) in order to be awarded credit for the course and/or to be promoted to the next grade. This requirement remains in force during the 2020-2021 school year.
Given the public health situation, student attendance may be earned through the delivery of virtual instruction. Students are expected to follow the attendance protocol presented in the Virtual Vipers section of this web page.
School systems are required to provide parents a notice of their public education enrollment and attendance rights and responsibilities during the COVID-19 pandemic using a document published by TEA.
Trackable student engagement and evidence of progress are used to measure attendance each period of the day. Expectations are consistent with engagement or progress expectations that would typically occur on-campus.
Teachers monitor and record attendance in each period of the day where a student is enrolled. Engagement and curricular progress is defined as one or more of the following observed by the teacher:
LMS: Data from the learning management system showing progress made that day.
TSI: Curricular progress evidenced from teacher/student interactions made that day.
CSA: Completion and submission of assignments planned for that day.
Teachers plan for and communicate each class’s daily method for demonstrating engagement and progress on the Weekly Learning Plan for Students. Teachers record student engagement each period of the day and progress as LMS, TSI, and/or CSA, as directed by the campus.
Students will be required to log in to ALL of their classes using the class Online video platform (Microsoft TEAMS or Zoom) and be visibly present utilizing their webcam at the specified time of their class period. Attendance will be taken during the first five minutes of the class period and will be monitored throughout the lesson. Students will be asked to keep their webcam turned OFF until called upon by the teacher for attendance or class purposes.
Synchronous Learning: Students are expected to be present and active throughout the entire class period. Students will be asked to keep their webcam turned OFF until called upon by the teacher for attendance or class participation.
Asynchronous Learning: Students are expected to be present by actively interacting with the course via Canvas as specified by the teacher. This could include a digital check in or submission or progress on a specified assignment. Students will be responsible for attending every class period to be counted present for attendance.
