Student learning in special areas during the school day is key to meeting the needs of the whole child through the learning of essential skills in PE, library, art, and music class. In addition, students have the opportunity to participate in clubs during and after school to develop areas of talent and interest to them. As clubs are optional for students, they are considered a privilege and are earned through meeting academic and behavioral expectations.
In addition to instruction in language arts, math, science, social studies, and health, students attend special area classes for 50 minutes each day. These special classes include:
4th and 5th grade students are provided the opportunity to enroll in a club during the first semester and again during the second semester. Clubs change from semester to semester depending on interest and availability. Clubs in past years have included art club, journalism club, math club, reading club, service club, library club, PE club, and participation in the Mustang All Star Choir if the student successfully auditions for membership. Due to demand, students may not always be afforded their first choice of a club, but every attempt is made to allow students one of their top three choices. The Mustang All Star Choir is directed by our music teacher, Mr. Rowland. Choir students attend rehearsal during their club time for the entire school year.
Club participation is considered a privilege for students, as determined by grade level teachers. Students earn clubs through completing classwork, demonstrating hard work during learning activities, and meeting teacher and school behavior expectations.
Depending on grade level, our students have the opportunity to participate in clubs that take place periodically after school. Please visit the links below or contact the club sponsor of each club if you are interested in your child participating. Dates and times differ for each club.
Most afterschool clubs will begin in mid-September. Club leaders will share additional information and expectations with families before their club starts. Parents must sign a consent form before a student can begin participating in clubs at school. It is important to remember that participation in afterschool clubs is considered a privilege, and students can lose the opportunity to participate in clubs if expectations for behavior and participation are not met.
Two of our afterschool clubs, GOAL and Teach Denton, are not clubs that parents sign up for. Rather, students are invited to join these clubs based on teacher and staff recommendations.
