Supplies

Below is an example of a beginning orchestra supply list and a description of how you will get supplies for orchestra.

Some campuses may have slightly different supply requirements. Please do not begin purchasing or renting orchestra supplies until you register for orchestra at your campus and receive information directly from your campus orchestra director.

You will get an instrument in one of the following ways:

RENT from an approved music store - parents pay a monthly fee to rent from a private music store. Most music stores use a "rent-to-own" program where you build a credit with the store over the years that can eventually be used towards purchasing an instrument from that store when the student reaches a full-size instrument.

DISTRICT FEE-WAIVER PROGRAM - Students who qualify for free or reduced lunch may check out an instrument directly from the district for a small one-time maintenance fee. Students must re-apply for free or reduced lunch each school year and provide proof of qualification to their director.

      • Make sure you apply for free or reduced lunch before the school year begins. Apply at schoolcafe.com and visit the DISD Child Nutrition Department website for additional information and resources.

      • You will receive an approval letter through the mail or through email that confirms that you qualify for free or reduced lunch. You will need to provide your orchestra director a copy of this letter to apply for a district instrument.

PURCHASE an instrument from a recommended vendor. Since most students do not begin on a full-size instrument, and many advance through several sizes before reaching full size, it is recommended to rent an instrument in the beginning stages. It is highly recommended that parents not purchase an instrument from any vendor not recommended by your director. See more information on the Approved Music Store List.

Did you know that string instruments come in different sizes? Before you get an instrument you will need to know what size of instrument to request. Your director will provide you with information about sizing yourself, or will meet with you in person to size you.

Participation Fee: Most elementary campuses will require a one-time minimal fee for orchestra participation. Depending on the campus, this may include expenses such as the student's orchestra t-shirt, additional classroom supplies, online instructional memberships, and/or field trip participation costs.
