Genius Hour 2023

In my 6th and 7th grade EXPO classes, we loosely follow Andi McNair's Genius Hour format.  Students have time each week to pursue a passion.  They could be learning a new skill, creating something, or working with an new piece of technology.  Once they've decided how they want to spend their time, they must determine what product they want to make, and then they pitch their idea to the class.  After the pitch, they have time each week to research, collaborate, and create a product to share with the world!

This is my personal project that involves the work of my students.  We took existing fairy tale stories and used ChatGPT to "reimagine" them.  Students took the new story text generated by ChatGPT and designed a page on Canva for our digital flip book.  We had a lot of fun coming up with ideas to breathe new life into old stories.

THE HOUSE

THE HOUSE

This is a game called "The House" by 6th graders Bruno and Hudson.  They used Google Slides to make a create- your-own-adventure game.  Enjoy!

Titan Talk: Podcast

Thanks to Mrs. Campos, our campus DLS, for the equipment and instruction!!

A group of four 7th grade girls (Michelle, Renata, Jordyn, and Mariana) used OBS to record a podcast.  Once they were finished, they used FlexClip to edit their recordings, and then they created a trailer with clips from multiple recordings.  The podcast was made available to the public on a Wix site.

Timelapse Video: Baking Brownies

6th graders Aubrey, Trinity, Aniya, and Nicolette recorded a timelapse video while they made brownies from scratch.  I supervised, and we had a lot of fun.  Not many kids know that we have an oven on campus!

Photography

6th graders Norah and Valery took a collection of photographs.  They turned out amazing, and I think the ladies learned quite a bit about the history of photography in the process.

Book of Poetry

6th grader Emery is writing a book of poems for young children.  Here are two examples of her work.  One day, she hopes to be a published author/poet.

Recipe Website

6th Grade students Marcos and Ayon curated a set of recipes.  Their original plan was to create a carboard model that represents the art of cooking, but they did not have time.

Wat Samphran Temple

(Bangkok, Thailand)

6th grade students Leah and Josie made this incredible structure using cardboard and hot glue.  It turned out so great!!!  I really enjoyed watching their process.

This is a beautifully crafted game by 7th grade students Angela and Emma.  It is a cake-making game they created in celebration of Mother's Day.  Check it out!
