Unit 1: Interpretation Book Clubs - Analyzing Themes.
The focus of this unit is for our students to become self-directed and critical readers. They do this through understanding fictional texts using comprehension strategies. This is a great unit for students to learn to love reading! We will foster that through finding books that bring the students joy and connecting meaning to the stories that they read.
Unit 2: Tackling Complexity: Moving Through the Ladder of Nonfiction Text.
In our second nine weeks, we turn to nonfiction text. This can be a challenge for students but the goal is for them to become researchers and learners of the world through reading. Students will work on summarizing, analyzing author's craft, inferring, and comparing and contrasting.
Unit 3: Argument and Advocacy: Researching Debatable Issues
Students will use databases and books to research issues within their lives and the world around them. Students then use this research during their writing classes to compose a writing about their opinion.
Unit 4: Fantasy Book Clubs: The Magic of Themes and Symbols
