Take Home folders
Students receive blue take home folders at the beginning of the year that will go home and return every day. In these folders, students will have homework, forms to be filled out, flyers, graded work, and other important information. It is very important that parents are seeing these folders each day and that they return to school. Please help your student stay on top of their take home folders.
snack in 3rd grade
We will have a designated snack time each day after specials, around 2:00pm. Students are welcome and encouraged to bring a healthy, mess-free snack. I try my best to bring extra snacks for students who do not have any. If you are willing and able to donate foods such as Goldfish, Cheez-its, or crackers, it is very appreciated!
Please no snacks with peanuts in the classroom due to allergy. These foods are welcome at lunch in the cafeteria as there are peanut free spaces there.
Homework FAQs
How often is homework assigned?
Homework will be assigned weekly or bi-weekly. I will always communicate the due date with you if it is in paper format. Typically, math homework will be a paper packet. I do not check homework daily because I understand that we are all very busy in the evenings. I like for families to have the flexibility to complete their homework at your own pace. You will notice that a math packet will be assigned on Monday and not be due until Friday OR it will be assigned on Monday and not be due until the following Monday. This gives you and your child enough time to complete the practice according to your extracurricular schedule.
How much time should my child spend working on homework?
In 3rd grade, it is expected that students are working on homework for no more than 30 minutes a night (that is math and reading combined). This should be approximately 20 minutes of reading and 10 minutes of math. Please make sure you are adjusting this based on the needs of your family and your quality time together as that is just as valuable!
Are there consequences for late/missing homework?
Missing homework - I will provide an extra copy and expect the student to complete the homework by the original due date unless there was an emergency or an absence.
Late homework - I will expect the student to work on the homework when they arrive in class each morning until it is completed. Students who complete their homework each week will earn "Fun Friday" when those students are finishing their homework.
Can I help my child complete their homework?
Yes! I always encourage the students to advocate for themselves and ask for help when they get stuck. However, I understand that teaching has changed since we were kids and you may not know how to help. Please reach out if you were unable to help them. I can work with the students if they bring the homework to school the next day.
What will homework cover?
Homework will always be directly related to what we did in class that day/week. Typically, it will be easier than in class assignments to encourage more independence at home and help build confidence!
What if the homework is too easy or too hard?
Homework may seem like it is not the right level for your student. This is okay! The idea is that students are learning to expand their learning beyond the school setting and have the opportunity to develop independence. I will adjust the difficulty level of homework if they are showing a need in class.
Grading Policy
Our grading system is as follows:
3 - Meets Expectations—consistently demonstrates proficient understanding and applies skills independently with minimal teacher support.
2 - Making Progress—demonstrates initial stages of understanding; applies skills but requires teacher intervention and reinforcement.
1 - Insufficient Progress—demonstrates a lack of understanding; difficulty accomplishing grade level tasks; re-teaching consistently required
