The National English Honor Society (NEHS) recognizes the academic accomplishments of America’s high school students and promotes their continuing interest in the English language arts. NEHS is the only high school honor society exclusively for students of English. As such, it provides a unique opportunity to engage students, teachers, and local schools in the valuable experience of discipline-related national honor-society participation.
The National English Honor Society (NEHS) was founded on 25 March 2004 by Sigma Tau Delta, the International English Honor Society, as an outreach to high school students to promote their continuing interest in the English language arts. The NEHS is the only high school honor society exclusively for students of English, and membership is an honor bestowed on students selected for their accomplishments in the field of English and in overall academic achievement.
The Society’s primary goals are:
to recognize on the national level those who merit special note for past and current accomplishments in the discipline of English;
to nurture members to further develop their abilities in the fields of English;
and to encourage members to use their talents in the service of others
to foster and promote a love of literature, reading, and related ELA activities in a creative, fun way.
to serve by creating and celebrating a “language rich environment,” helping raise STAAR, PSAT, and other scores.
to celebrate reading, books, authors, poetry, plays, all kinds of literature, etc.
to be inclusive to any student who wishes to join if they love reading and literature and meet the criteria for joining.

The NEHS motto “Gelast Sceal Mid Are,” is Old English for “duty goes with honor.”
The motto represents one of the earliest forms of our language, affirming and celebrating our obligation to use our gifts in service to others. Service to peers, school, and community are part and parcel of the NEHS mission, and indeed, in the grammatical structure of the Old English phrase, “duty” actually precedes “honor.”
White carnations are marks of distinction and symbolic of pure truth.
The deep richness of royal blue represents creativity and inspiration, while the bright fullness of gold reflects excellence and nobility of spirit.
