Summer Reading has been postponed for summer 2020 and summer 2021.

AP & DC English IV: Summer Reading 2019

Welcome!

Advanced Placement and Dual Credit English IV are designed to be college-level courses, preparing you for the rigors of college-level work as well as for the AP exam in May. To maximize our time, we begin with summer reading.

Read both works analytically (not just for pleasure). Think about what the author writes, how it’s written, and why it’s effective. Be prepared to turn in your assignment, take an exam, and discuss these works in the first weeks of school.

Due Dates: The second week of class:

“A” day—Tuesday, August 20; “B” day—Wednesday, August 21

Before you read, download the assignment sheet, the reading guides and “How to Annotate a Book” below.

When purchasing a copy of Macbeth, here are some editions to keep in mind:

  • Folger Shakespeare Library - These have side-by-side notes as well as summaries at the beginning of each scene to help if you are struggling.

  • Barnes & Noble - These have, in my opinion, the best notes and formatting, but less to help you compared to other editions if you are struggling to understand the language.

  • No Fear - Use this only as a last resort. Never, ever quote from it. The language is clumsy, inelegant, and often inaccurate. It may be helpful to refer to it when necessary, but do not simply read their "translation" as though you are reading the play itself.
