We recommend all beginning students rent an instrument from a reputable store for the first few years of playing.
The instrument grows with the child. Renting allows your child to play on a quality, functional instrument while being able to change instrument sizes easily with your rental company as your child grows. If you purchase an instrument, you will need to purchase a new one each time your child is ready for the next size until they reach the instrument’s full size.
If you choose to purchase an instrument please look at purchasing through a local music store, not a pawnshop or online. In general, the price reflects the quality of an instrument. A cheaper instrument found at a store that does not specialize in stringed instruments will most likely be hard to play.
Both Dallas Strings and Music & Arts have "step up" sales each school year where families can apply their rental credit toward the purchase of an instrument.
Please have a conversation with us and your child's private lesson teacher before making an instrument purchase. We can help guide you in the process and find an instrument your child will be happy with for years to come.
