GRADE 1- 5 and 6-8 ACCELERATION
All credit by exams are in person.
Test day information will be emailed after the registration window closes.
Students wishing to accelerate through (skip) one grade level must meet the following minimum requirements:
The student
must be enrolled with Denton ISD.
cannot attempt grade acceleration for a grade they are currently enrolled in.
The parent/guardian must meet with the campus to initiate a conversation about acceleration and the registration process.
Elementary: campus administrator
Middle school: professional school counselor
Test Requirements
Students testing must take and demonstrate 80% or higher mastery on all of the following subjects:
Mathematics
Science
Social Studies
Language Arts
After testing is complete,
the elementary campus administrator will inform the parent/guardian of the final acceleration decision.
the middle school campus professional school counselor will communicate with the parent/guardian.
Preparing for the Exams:
Examinations are criterion-referenced tests from University of Texas High School. Students are encouraged to review the course study guide(s) on the website below. Denton ISD cannot provide additional reviews or study materials for Credit by Exams.
Credit by Exam Policy for Grades 1-5 & 6-8 Acceleration
Only students currently enrolled at a Denton ISD campus or have completed the next school years registration are eligible to apply for a Credit by Exam
Approval for the use of a CBE must initiate from the campus
Students may take up to two exams per day.
Scores not meeting the passing standard are not documented on the permanent record.
Students may advance one grade level only.
Per Texas Education Code §48.003 c A child may be enrolled in the first grade if the child is at least six years of age at the beginning of the school year of the district or has been enrolled in the first grade or has completed kindergarten in the public schools in another state before transferring to a public school in this state.
Per Texas Education Code §74.24 b(2) A student in any of Grades 1-5 must be accelerated one grade if he or she meets the following requirements: (A) the student scores 80% on a criterion-referenced test for the grade level he or she wants to skip in each of the following areas: language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies; (B) a school district representative recommends that the student be accelerated; and (C) the student's parent or guardian gives written approval for the acceleration.
Per Texas Education Code §74.24 c(8), A student in any of Grades 6-12 must be given credit for an academic subject in which he or she has had no prior instruction if the student scores: (C) 80% on any other criterion-referenced test approved by the school district board of trustees for the applicable course.
Per Texas Education Code §74.24 c(11), If a student is given credit in accordance with paragraph (8) of this subsection in a subject on the basis of an examination on which the student scored 80% or higher, the school district must enter the examination score on the student's transcript, and the student is not required to take an applicable end-of-course assessment instrument for the course.
