With Prior Instruction
All school year credit by exams are in person at the students home campus during school hours.
Test day information will be emailed after the registration window closes.
The parent/guardian and student must meet with the campus professional school counselor to initiate a conversation about credit recovery and the registration process.
The student is enrolling in the district from a non-accredited school and needs to verify credit for courses taken
The student has failed a subject or course and needs to recover credit
The student earned a passing grade but failed to earn credit in a course due to excessive absences and needs to recover credit.
Students must demonstrate mastery of 70% or higher on a CBE to earn recovery/verification credit.
After testing is complete, the campus professional school counselor will communicate with the parent/guardian.
High school recovery exams are based on the Secondary Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS).
Examinations are criterion-referenced tests from University of Texas High School or an adaptive test through Avant. Students are encouraged to review the course study guide(s) or sample test on the websites below. Denton ISD cannot provide additional reviews or study materials for Credit by Exams.
Only students currently enrolled at a Denton ISD campus or have completed the next school years registration are eligible to apply for a Credit by Exam
Approval for the use of a CBE must initiate from the campus
Students may take up to two exams per day (UTHS).
Per Texas Education Code §74.24 c(9), a student may not attempt to earn credit by examination for a specific high school course more than two times.
Per Texas Education Code §74.24 c(10), If a student fails to earn credit by examination for a specific high school course before the beginning of the school year in which the student would ordinarily be required to enroll in that course, the student must satisfactorily complete the course to receive credit.
Per Texas Education Code §74.24 c(12), In accordance with local school district policy, a student in any of Grades 6-12 may be given credit for an academic subject in which he or she had some prior instruction if the student scores 70% on a criterion-referenced test approved by the school district board of trustees for the applicable course.

After successful completion of a CBE, the course credit and numerical score earned will be posted to the student's high school transcript.
Beginning with the 2024-2025 senior cohort (freshmen in 2021-2022), CBE score(s) earned for credit recovery are not included in Ranking GPA calculations.
Scores not meeting the passing standard are not documented on the transcript or permanent record.
