World's Finest Chocolate Fundraiser- 8/30-9/30
5th Grade is starting our World's Finest Chocolate Fundraiser soon! We will be selling the $2 variety box to raise money for Science Camp! Students that want to participate will be given a permission slip this week to sign and return!

Friday, August 30th is a half day for our students. Students will be dismissed at 12:00pm.
Science Camp Deposits Due- 9/6
Cost: $75 deposit due on September 6th. At most camp could cost $300 per student/chaperone. However, fundraising normally brings it down to $250 per student/chaperone. Cash, money order or check written to Savannah Elementary are accepted.
Curriculum
Reading, Writing, Grammar
Reading: Who is the man in the white shirt? Students have been using what they know about the characters in Eleven to make accurate predictions. As we finish Eleven this week, students will also be completing their beginning of the year I-Ready diagnostic as well as their reading assessment with their ELAR teacher.
Writing: Students are starting the revising and editing phase for writing a personal narrative, a small moment story, while setting writing goals as 5th graders. They will work on elaborating important parts of their narrative and putting the finishing touches using a editing and revising checklist before completing their narratives on Friday.
Grammar: After finishing reviewing different parts of speech, students will focus on Collective Nouns.
Math, Science, Social Studies
Math: The focus in fifth grade is the transition from using various strategies for multiplication and division to using the standard algorithm for both operations. As we start our Whole Number Operation Unit, students will gain a stronger sense of the value and reasonableness of numbers as they connect their understanding to experiences they have had or seen in their mathematical world.
Science: Matter is classified based on measurable, testable, and observable physical properties including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, gas), relative density (sinking and floating using water as a reference point), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal or electric energy. Students will compare and contrast the physical properties of matter.
Social Studies: Students are learning what geography can teach us about the United States. This week are focusing on physical features and climate as we learn how geography effects where people live in the United States.

Cell Phone and Smart Watch Policy
Cell Phone and Smart Watch Policy
In an effort to keep students engaged and learning while at school, our 5th grade team does not allow for use of these devices during the school day. Students will be asked to leave these devices in their backpacks or in the designated cell phone pouches just inside our classroom doors. Students will have their own safe space for these devices conveniently located by our classroom exit so that in the case of an emergency, teachers can quickly grab all devices and bring them with us. Students can always ask permission to use their devices to reach out to a parent/guardian and the teacher will find a good place and time for them to do so.
