Special Rotations
Special Rotations
With Orchestra an option in 5th grade, our specials look a bit different. Instead of entire classrooms visiting a special each day, our students are divided into color groups! Today your student found out what color group they are in. If your student is unsure, please reach out to your homeroom teacher. Please see the specials rotation schedule to see what day your student has each special. This year, library will not be in the specials rotation as students will visit library during their ELAR block. Don't forget to have your Gator wear athletic shoes on PE days.
Exert From Savannah Shoutout: Telecommunication devices are defined as devices that allow for electronic communications and the electronic exchange of data and information including voice, data, and video. Examples include, but are not limited to, computers, cell phones, smart phones, telephones, mobile devices, wireless devices, tablets, smart watches, laptops or any other electronic devices and related accessories (including, but not limited to wires, headphones/airpods, and ear buds) that transmits, receives, or stores digital media. Denton ISD Parent Handbook States:
Except when being used for principal or teacher approved purposes, cell phones and electronic devices shall not be visible, audible, or used during school hours as determined by the principal.
In an effort to keep students engaged and learning while at school, our 5th grade team does not allow for use of these devices during the school day. Students will be asked to leave these devices in their backpacks or in the designated cell phone pouches just inside our classroom doors. Students will have their own safe space for these devices conveniently located by our classroom exit so that in the case of an emergency, teachers can quickly grab all devices and bring them with us. Students can always ask permission to use their devices to reach out to a parent/guardian and the teacher will find a good place and time for them to do so.
Thank you for helping us keep students learning while at school! If you have any questions, please reach out to your child's homeroom teacher!
-5th Grade Team
Reading, Writing, Grammar
Reading: This week we will continue reading Eleven as a class. Students will focus on the characters, making predictions, summarizing, and finding strategies to help them when parts of a story may be confusing.
Writing: Students are starting the brainstorming and drafting phase for writing a personal narrative, a small moment story, while setting writing goals as 5th graders.
Grammar: We will review the different parts of speech to include nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs.
Math, Science, Social Studies
Math: The focus in fifth grade is the transition from using various strategies for multiplication and division to using the standard algorithm for both operations. As we start our Whole Number Operation Unit, students will gain a stronger sense of the value and reasonableness of numbers as they connect their understanding to experiences they have had or seen in their mathematical world.
Science: Matter is classified based on measurable, testable, and observable physical properties including mass, magnetism, physical state (solid, liquid, gas), relative density (sinking and floating using water as a reference point), solubility in water, and the ability to conduct or insulate thermal or electric energy. Students will compare and contrast the physical properties of matter.
Social Studies: Students are learning what geography can teach us about the United States. This week are focusing on new vocabulary words: climate, compass, geography, globe, government, landform, latitude, longitude, physical feature, vegetation.
5th grade uses a behavioral system to motivate our students and celebrate their amazing CHAMPS called POWER PASSES. This is a laminated pass on a lanyard they wear that give them privileges other students may not have. Each student started off with one today, and they lose them for behaviors we set as a team. Easily speaking, CHAMPS violations in the hall, any classroom redirection, office referrals, minutes on the wall, not finishing work… you get the idea. If they lose it, they earn it back in 5 school days.
So, what are the privileges?! Students that have a power pass get these current privileges… hats and hoods in the hall, first choice of clubs, first choice in specials for freedom Fridays, first to line up for lunch, first out to recess once the prior grade is lined up, free time within subject block if all work is done, flex seating in the cafeteria, flex seating in class when appropriate, etc.
The goal of this system is to reward those students who consistently follow expectations and give them the privileges they should have, and motivating students to make the right choices. We used this system last year and had AMAZING success! Please let us know if you have any questions regarding our Power Pass system.
