Email ~ Email is an easy and fast way to contact me. I check my email periodically throughout the day (lunch & planning) and can usually give you a quick response. The first time you email me, it will probably go to SPAM, or it may even be blocked. I should be able to retrieve it without any problem, but we need to do a trial first. Please send me an email by Friday, August 16th, so I can make sure I have everyone’s email address. This will allow me to make sure I can receive your e-mails. I will also set up a group email for our class. I really like to be able to quickly communicate with my parents. Please keep in mind that I will be teaching and may not be able to respond at that moment.
Another good way to reach me will be through Class Dojo set up as well in which you will be able to text me or reply back directly to me only if you need to respond if I send a group message. The message will reply to me only. This is probably going to be the fast way to get a message to me. I also post pictures of what we are doing throughout the day as well. I am also able to send quick reminders.
Quick Links for Parent Resources for Denton ISD- Feel free to bookmark this link as it will have all quick links and things to find for Parents. https://www.dentonisd.org/families

Special Celebrations
We love to celebrate 2nd grade!! We celebrate birthdays and holidays.
Class parties will be held 3 times per year (Winter, Valentine’s and End of the Year) and they will be during a designated time slot at the end of our instructional day. We will let you know as we are near our celebration times.
Compliment Parties ~ When our class has filled up our CHAMPS Chart we will celebrate. We have an opportunity to receive compliments from other adults throughout our school. We will get to have a compliment party for exceptional behavior. These special activities will take place on that Friday. Each child gets to put a party idea in the “Party Bucket”. They are usually things like extra recess, special treats, or getting to bring something special to school, like games or stuffed animals. I usually don’t send home a note because I like to leave the responsibility up to each child to bring what they need for this type of party.
Birthdays ~ Let’s celebrate! (You may send any celebratory food such as store-bought cupcakes or cookies. We will pass out at class designated times.) We will celebrate together in class by singing to the child and I make it as special as I can; I also let them pick a book from the Birthday basket for me to read to the class. Birthday invitations cannot be passed out at school unless there is one for everyone in the class. We don’t want any child feeling left out. Thanks for your understanding.
Flashlight Friday ~ Each week we will have Flashlight Friday. Your child may bring a flashlight to use each Friday. We will be doing different activities using our flashlights. Please send a flashlight with batteries for your child. If you can donate an extra flashlight or batteries, let me know; I have a few for students to use. Please label the flashlights as they will stay in the classroom daily.
Reading Book Source ~ If you would like to grow your child's library at home or help us grow our classroom library you made order books at Wilburn Scholastic Page. All you have to do is click the link order and pay or send payment. I will be notified and hit submit on the 22nd of each month.
Specials ~ We go to specials every day: 11:25-12:15. The following is our Special Areas Schedule: Monday-(We rotate from PE, Music, Art) Tuesday-PE, Wednesday-Art, Thursday-PE, and Friday-Music. Please be sure to dress your child for PE activities on rotating Mondays. They need to wear or bring tennis shoes for PE on designated days. Flip Flops are NOT allowed. Please help your child remember to bring his or her library book back when due weekly.
Recess ~ Weather permitting, we will go to recess every day after lunch (1:20-1:35). Please watch the weather and send a jacket as needed. Cold fronts tend to sneak up on us, but we will still need to go outside for fresh air and to get out our wiggles. When the weather is inclement, we will have an indoor recess.
Medications ~ We must have a signed medical release form in the Nurse’s Office before any medication can be given to your child. This includes ALL over the counter and prescription medications. Please do not send your child with cough drops. See Misty Lambert if you have any questions. 940-369-1400.
Money ~ When you need to send money to school for any reason, please put it in an envelope or Ziploc baggie with the following information written on it: Teacher’s name, child’s name, amount, and purpose for the money (lunch, field trip, etc.).
Grading & Report Cards
Our grading system is as follows:
3 Meets Expectations—consistently demonstrates proficiency.
understanding and applying skills independently with minimal teacher support.
2 Making Progress—demonstrates initial stages of understanding; applies skills but requires teacher intervention and reinforcement.
1 Insufficient Progress—demonstrates a lack of understanding; difficulty accomplishing grade level tasks; re-teaching consistently required.
Because the report card is a checklist of skills, you may or may not see graded papers go home. We will use assignments to determine the grades for each child, but some may be verbal or even observational. We will not necessarily be taking grades on papers, even if we use it to assess learning. Also, you may not see some papers come home until later because we have used them in a hallway display. If you ever have questions about grading, don’t hesitate to ask us! I also keep some of their learning as a learning log like a scrapbook that will come home at the end the year.
Homework ~ Every night (Monday-Thursday) your child will have homework. It is a good way to help review what we are learning and help keep parents engaged with our learning as well. I will begin sending home guided reading books when we finish Beginning of the year assessing. Your child should be reading their guided reading books at least 20 minutes each night. Homework is a review of math and writing skills that we have learned in class. Special Projects will have more time.
Lunch ~ Our lunch time is 12:47-1:17. I would like to encourage all parents to log on to parent connect for your child's lunch account. You can sign up to receive emails when your child’s lunch account balance is low. It allows you to know when to send or add money for your child’s lunch account. Also, you will be able to see if your child purchased anything extra, like ice cream or chips, etc. If you choose to send money, please send it in an envelope or Ziploc bag. Child Nutrition https://www.dentonisd.org/childnutrition
Newsletter ~ Mrs. Timmons sends out a Campus Newsletter every week please check those out. Every week, I will send home or post a Newsletter that will contain information about what we are doing in our class. I just want to keep you informed about what we have been up to in class. Most times it will be on the weekly Homework sheet.
Snacks ~ I think it is important to have a small snack to keep us going. In the past I was able to ask for parents help with supplying snacks. I will send home a rotation schedule asking for your help with 22 students. If you are able to help our class that would be greatly appreciate it; if you are not able to please let me know ahead of time so I can plan accordingly. You are also welcome to send your child a HEALTHY snack. I will have backup individually wrapped/boxed snacks if needed. Some easy snacks are pretzels, crackers, animal crackers, cheese sticks, granola bars, and goldfish individually wrapped. Snacks with chocolate and peanut butter are Not an Option. It works best if they are individually wrapped, but feel free to do what is best for you to supply. For example, you may send a big box of goldfish, Cheez-Its; all I ask is that it has not been opened. Thanks so much for your help.
Bonus ***Hero Reader ~ In addition to the daily homework assignment, your child should be reading 20 minutes every night. Your child may read a library book or a book from home. Your child may read, or you may read to your child magazines, newspapers, books, Kindle, Denton Public Library on-line resources, audiobooks or etc. Each day you will need to record the book your child read. You will need to write the title of the book that your child read and sign your name. If your child is reading chapter books, each chapter will count as a book. When your child has read 15 books, they will pick from the small treasure box. Once they have read 30 books, he or she will get to pick “special” prizes from the “BIG” Treasure Box. Star Hero Reader will begin the second week of school.
Tuesday Folders ~ Tuesday Newsday Folders will go home almost every Tuesday. The folder will contain graded papers, notes from the office and community, and other important information. Please be sure to check each Tuesday for this folder and return it the next day.
Transportation ~ You MUST send a note to school with your child anytime there is a change in how they will get home. I cannot allow your child to go home a different way without a note. Just having your child tell me is not enough. If your child has already left for school and you need to make a change, please call the office (940-369-1400) by 2:00 to let us know of the change. I just want to make sure everyone gets home safely.
Volunteers
For safety reasons, every volunteer needs a criminal background check EVERY YEAR to work at Nelson and to attend field trips. You can fill out the background check online. Please click the link to do so. https://www.dentonisd.org/volunteer You do not need a background check to visit with your child at celebrations in the classroom or having lunch with them.
Volunteer Statement –
Denton ISD prides itself on building strong partnerships with individuals and organizations who volunteer and make a lasting impact on the lives of our students, a fact we do not take for granted.
At that time, we are hopeful to begin bringing community members on campus, within the approved Denton ISD Safety Protocols. We will be extremely vigilant as our primary responsibility is to protect the health and well-being of our students, staff and the community.
Wow! This sure sounds like a lot, but I hope it has helped answer some questions you might have for this year. Please feel free to let me know if you have any questions. I am looking forward to an exciting year of learning!!!
