The Golden Shower is a semi-evergreen deciduous tree which becomes barren for a short while just before flowering. It is native to Southeast Asia.
Its large pinnate compound leaves have 3-8 pairs of leaflets alternately arranged. They are ovate-shaped, 6-15 cm long, and 3-8 cm wide.
The yellow flowers bloom in sumer. The bisexual flowers with a 4-7 cm diameter are in long hanging racemes of length 30-80 cm. Each flower consists of 5 ovate petals and 10 stamens.
The fruits are woody, long cyndrical pods which are 30-60 cm in length and 2-3 cm in diameter. Immature fruits are green in colour and they become dark brown and release a pungent odour when mature. Seeds are poisonous.
Fruitpulps are used as mild laxative for stomach problems, and the roots can be used to treat skin diseases.
The Golden Shower is the national flower of Thailand and the state flower of Kerla in India.
