Our Classroom:

You are required to bring your charged iPad and earbuds to class each day. In addition, you may also bring a laptop. No cell phones will be allowed in class for the use of schoolwork.

You are required to keep a lab notebook (composition style) that will be used during class time. Lab notebooks are not allowed out of the classroom for any reason. You may use any notes hand written in your lab notebook on any assessment.

Water must be in a reusable container to be consumed in class. Disposable, plastic water bottles are not allowed. If you are in possession of any disposable plastic bottles, keep them in your bags, out of sight.

No food or drink is allowed on the rug or sofa. Please be mindful to limit your use of disposable plastic when packing/purchasing food.

You are expected to leave the room the way you found it each day. This includes putting chairs, stools, and pillows back in their proper places, and disposing of any trash or recycling on your way out.

Tardiness:

If you are tardy to class more than three times, a detention will be issued. Further tardies will result in a referral to your AP. If you are later than fifteen minutes to class, you will not be marked tardy, you will be marked absent. No exceptions.

Leaving Class:

If you wish to leave class for any reason, write your name and time you left on the whiteboard on the door. Leave your cell phone(s) in the caddy on the prep room door. Only one student may be out of the room at a time.

If you are gone for more than ten minutes you may lose future privileges. If you are gone for more than fifteen minutes you will be considered truant and marked absent from class. No exceptions.

Consequences for not following classroom norms are as follows:

First offense: Warning

Second offense: Detention

Third Offense: Office referral

Technology:

Technology will be incorporated into the astronomy curriculum in relevant ways for each unit studied. The use of technology, websites, and applications will be used for research, collaboration, and presentation.

Students are required to have a Twitter account they can use for class tweets.

It is the your responsibility to use all technology in astronomy according to the guidelines set up by Coppell High School and Ms. B.

Layered Earth/Starry Night Software:

A significant percent of class time will be devoted to exploring our home planet and the night sky through Layered Earth and Starry Night labs using laptops assigned to our class. If you miss class time during these work days, you will be required to make up your lab before or after school by making a tutoring appointment with Ms. B, or at Friday Night Live.

Grading:

You are expected to frequently monitor the online grade book to stay up to date on your progress.

All grades will be posted to the grade book within one week after each assessment.

Grading Categories:

-Performance Tasks (55%) 4 minimum; lab work, class activities, quizzes, post-lab assessments, presentations

-Summative Assessments (45%) 2 minimum; unit assessments, projects, socratic seminars

Late Work:

-Assignments turned in within due date A or B Day are eligible for a FULL credit of 100.

-Assignments turned in on the NEXT A or B Day may earn a maximum grade of a 70.

-Assignments turned in on the second A or B day may earn a maximum grade of 70 and a learner will be assigned a Friday Night Live (FNL).

-If any assignment is NOT completed, you may be assigned a ZERO

Reassessment:

CHS Reassessment Practice: Educators are required to provide the opportunity for reassessment with test grades in the Summative Assessment category for learners who score below a 70. Campus intervention practices occur prior to reassessment, and the learner is responsible for attending designated re-teaching, tutoring or campus designed interventions.

Anyone who scores below a 70 on a test within the Summative Assessment category, has the opportunity to reassess for a score up to 70%, no higher.

Portfolios will be created and added to throughout the course.

Using your portfolio to demonstrate a progression of learning toward mastery of a topic may allow your grades on earlier assessments to be reassessed and replaced with a higher average to properly reflect your understanding of that topic.

Absences:

You have the same number of days missed to complete assessments for full credit.

Major assessments, such as projects and tests that have had prior notice, shall be completed or turned in the day the student returns to school.

For school related absences, please check the class calendar and Schoology prior to the absence for plans and instructions.

Students leaving class for Red/Gold/Green lunch will be responsible for completing and submitting all missed class work by the end of the day.

Procedures for Absences:

Before returning to class, check the course calendar to see what was missed.

If a lab or an assessment was missed, you will make up the assessment before or after school the day you return by making an appointment with Ms. B, or at Friday Night Live. No exceptions.

If lecture notes were missed, check Schoology for a copy of the notes. If clarification is needed, schedule tutoring time with Ms. B.

Cheating and Plagiarism:

Any attempt to cheat will result in a zero on the assessment in question. An attempt to cheat will be determined by Ms. B and will not be discussed until a conference with parents and principal/counselor can be arranged.

One learner aiding others with answers will result in all individuals receiving zeros on the assessment.

When working on research for collaborative projects and presentations, you are expected to write in your own words, use your own thoughts, and cite all sources in MLA format.

Plagiarism or sharing wording on any assessment will result in a zero. No exceptions. Cite all sources in MLA format to avoid any unintended copying of others' work.

If you earn a zero on any assessment because of cheating or plagiarism, the following consequences will be issued by administration:

First offense: Zero on assessment and Saturday school

Second offense: Zero on assessment and three (3) days ISS

Third Offense: Zero on assessment and five (5) days ISS
