Sustainable Development Goals Initiative

Global Goals for Sustainable Development

In September 2015, 193 world leaders agreed to 17 Global Goals for Sustainable Development. If these Goals are completed, it would mean an end to extreme poverty, inequality and climate change by 2030

Global Competences:

Students in ESS will investigate the world and independently be able to:

Identify an issue, generate a question, and explain the significance of locally, regionally, or globally focused researchable questions

Analyze, integrate, and synthesize evidence collected to construct coherent responses to globally significant researchable questions

Develop an argument based on compelling evidence that considers multiple perspectives and draws defensible conclusions

Students in ESS will be able to independently recognize global perspectives, such as:

Recognizing and expressing their own perspective on situations, events, issues, or phenomena and identify the influences on that perspective

Examining perspectives of other people, groups, or schools of thought and identify the influences on those perspectives

Articulating how differential access to knowledge, technology, and resources affects quality of life and perspectives

Students in ESS will independently communicate ideas to a global community, and:

Reflect on how effective communication affects understanding and collaboration in an interdependent world

ESS's Year-Long SDGs Initiative

All ESS students are participating in a year-long Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) initiative based on the UN's 17 Goals for a Sustainable Future

First Semester

Starting Second Nine Weeks:

Each student works through a process that determines which global goal they are most passionate about. From there they do extensive research on their chosen goal in order to launch an awareness campaign that they design

After becoming experts on their chosen topic, each student develops and shares a social media slogan, and creates a two-minute "documentary" to spread awareness and launch their campaigns

ESS organizes a documentary showcase the week before semester exams to share the students' campaigns. Social media is used with student-created hashtags to spread awareness and share documentaries

All stakeholders are welcome to attend the showcase and provide feedback

Second Semester

Third Nine Weeks until Spring Break:

ESS students team up with peers who have the same global goal to design and implement action plans that address specific target goals set by the United Nations

Action plans in past years have led teams of ESS students to host community events, organize fundraisers, head food and book drives, volunteer their time with local organizations, and create and direct short films to further spread awareness for their campaigns

Fourth Nine Weeks (Earth Day):

ESS SDG teams will present their final projects at an Earth Day related festival in the Coppell or Dallas area

Student efforts, overall, make positive strides in helping solve their global concerns at a local level
