October is a busy time in the band world! While high school marching bands are square in the middle of competition season, middle school band is gearing up for pep rallies, region competitions, and our first 7th/8th grade concert of the year!
Meanwhile, our Beginning Band students are mastering the fundamentals on their instruments and demonstrating their music-reading skills so well that they're finally ready to start playing songs this month! Please help them succeed by ensuring they have a safe place to practice their instrument at home everyday. The music will start to flow; but to get TO the good notes, you have to get THROUGH the bad notes.

Our first concert of the year for our 7th and 8th grade band classes is coming up! The Concert begins at 6:30 PM but don't be afraid to come early. The SVMS Book Fair begins at 5:30 PM, and you can enjoy performances and showcases from other fine arts programs on campus. Come support the arts at SVMS!
Student arrival times:
Concert Band (5th period): Seated in the band hall by 6:00 PM
Symphonic Band (3rd period): Seated in the band hall by 6:20 PM
Wind Ensemble (2nd period): Seated in the band hall by 6:40 PM

All-Region auditions are coming up! These auditions give our more advanced musicians an opportunity to perform alongside students from other middle schools in our region.
More information and a Google Form signup will be released NEXT WEEK.
This opportunity is primarily intended for students in 2nd and 3rd period band classes. However, 5th period students are also welcome to audition if they are prepared and working hard on their region etudes and scales.
We'll share additional details and expectations with students as auditions approach!

Sectionals continue every morning from 7:15β8:00 AM.
If your child is in a 7th or 8th grade band class, they need to attend their instrument's sectional each week to keep up with the advanced skills we're learning. This is especially important for our Wind Ensemble (2nd period) students!
We know students have busy schedules with athletics, tutoring, and other activities. However, these morning sectionals are our primary opportunity to work with students in small groups on the skills they need to succeed in band.
If your child has missed a sectional, please arrange a makeup session with one of us in the afternoon. We want every student to receive the instruction and support they need to keep growing!

Great news for all 7th and 8th graders: The district has officially approved our Dallas Trip for May 14β15, 2027!
This is one of the highlights of the year, and we're excited to begin planning another fantastic trip for our students.
Registration is expected to begin at the end of this month, so keep an eye out for the official signup information coming home soon!
We'll share more details about the itinerary, costs, and registration as they become available.

We're excited to get our weekly Fall Sectionals started - THIS WEEK!
We're excited to get our weekly Fall Sectionals started - THIS WEEK!
Sectionals give students focused time in smaller groups to work on advanced instrument techniques, All-Region audition music, and instrument-specific skills that we simply don't have as much time to cover during regular band class.
But there's another really important part of sectionals: we're a team! The more consistently our students are there, the more we can accomplish together. When an entire section is in the room, we can work on ensemble skills, learn from one another, and build the kind of section that makes the whole band stronger.
A QUICK NOTE ABOUT SCHEDULING
We know our students have busy mornings! We do our best to plan sectionals around athletic practices, club meetings, and other campus activities whenever possible.
At the same time, these sectionals are essentially Band Tutoringβa dedicated opportunity for students to receive focused instruction and get better at their instruments. We know many of our students also need tutoring in other subjects throughout the week, and we want them to have access to those opportunities too.
Because each instrument only has one morning each week dedicated to its Band sectional, we ask that you please make that time a priority whenever possible. School tutoring typically doesn't begin until 7:45 AM, while our sectionals run from 7:15β8:00 AM, so if your child needs tutoring in another subject, we would really appreciate it if that could be scheduled on a different morning when possible.
We know conflicts sometimes come up, and we understand that our students have a lot going on. We're simply asking for your help in protecting this one morning each week so that the whole section can be together and make the most of our time.
Thank you for helping us make these sectionals a valuable part of our students' growth!

Tuesday: Low Brass (Trombone, Baritone, Tuba) & All Saxophones

Percussion: We are currently working on the schedule for percussion sectionals and will announce that information soon.
WHO NEEDS TO ATTEND?
Wind Ensemble (2nd period band): Weekly sectionals are required and count toward the overall band grade. Students must attend a sectional or masterclass with a director or private teacher at least once each week.
If you can't make your scheduled morning sectional, you'll need to arrange a make-up time with a director after school.
Symphonic & Concert Band (3rd & 5th period band): Sectional attendance is invited and encouraged! If your instrument has a sectional that week, we'd love to have you there, especially if you plan to audition for the All-Region Band in November.
LET'S MAKE IT COUNT!
These mornings are a great opportunity to get better at our instruments and prepare for the challenges ahead. Please make your child's sectional a priority each week. The more of our musicians who are there, the more we can accomplishβand the stronger we become as a team!

Wow! What a First Week!
This was one of the most positive first weeks the Mustang Band has enjoyed in a long time!
Thank you to our students and parents for helping make the Smithson Valley Middle School Band a place where everyone belongs, where we can all make music together, and where it is just a fun place to teach!
As the year starts to unfold, please take a few minutes to look through the information below so you can stay on top of everything the Mustang Band will be doing in the coming weeks and months.

Our Annual Band Fundraiser kicked off with a bang on Friday! Last year, by the end of the first day, we had just crossed the $10,000 mark. This year, you all surpassed that by an additional $3,000!Β
And now, as I write this, we have just passed $20,000! That is an incredible amount of support in such a short amount of time, and I think it is safe to say that we need to adjust our goal.
Last year, we finished with more than $41,000 raised. So...why not try for $42,000 this year?! Every bit of that money goes right back into the students and the band program, so thank you for jumping in and supporting us so enthusiastically!

All Beginning Band students are invited to a fun-filled opening-of-the-year House Social THIS FRIDAY after school!
Students will start in the band hall after school before heading to their House Common Rooms for get-to-know-you games and other activities. We'll then move to the gym for some friendly competition, followed by snacks and treats! π
Pickup time: 5:30 PM
We're also looking for some older student leadersβ7th and 8th grade band students who are interested in helping lead their House and teach some of our Mustang Band traditions. If your child is interested in helping, have them come find us sometime this week. We'll be sending special invite-only emails to prospective student leaders with information about signing up.

It's time to start getting those instruments into the band hall!
Beginning Band students do NOT have to bring everything tomorrow. Just sometime this week, have your child stop by the band hall in the morning before school to drop off their instrument and/or supplies. We'll help each student go through their equipment and make sure they have what they need.

Those items are strictly for at-home use. We have plenty of music stands and marimbas here at school.

Please be sure to put your student's name on all items.
For instruments, please put the student's name on a luggage tag attached to the case. This makes it much easier for us to quickly identify instruments when several students have identical or similar cases.

If you haven't gotten an instrument yet, don't worryβbut please make sure you get quality equipment from a reputable source.
We strongly recommend avoiding instruments purchased from Temu, Amazon, or similar general marketplaces. If it is a brand that most band directors have never heard of, there is a good chance it could create more problems for your studentβand cost more in the long runβthan renting a quality instrument from one of the recommended music stores listed in our letter.
If you have questions, please reach out BEFORE purchasing an instrument. We would much rather help you find the right instrument first than try to solve a problem later!

Back-to-school Registration/Orientation is happening TOMORROW and WEDNESDAY. Before you come to SVMS, we need EVERYONE to:
READ the new SVMS Band Handbook. We made some changes from last year that we think you will like.
Fill out an ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM for the SVMS BAND (It's FINALLY a Google Form this year! No more paper formsβfor now!)
If using a school-owned instrument, complete a CISD Equipment Usage Agreement and bring it with you to registration.

There is also a calendar of events for the year you can print and hang on your fridge, a materials list for the first day of school, and more!

We are officially entering Year 3 of the House Sorting Project, and we can't wait to keep the tradition going! This program links students across class periods and grade levels to foster community, leadership, and friendly competition across the whole SVMS band program.
Here is what you need to know to get ready:
7th & 8th Graders: We already kickstarted the year at our Mini Camp and House Social on August 10thβthey had a blast reconnecting with their housemates! If you missed it, no worries! We will get you caught up when school starts.
Beginners & New Students: Watch your email this week for your official House Sorting Quiz invite so you can find your team! Will you be in Impact, Serenade, Spark, and Bravura?
Beginner House Social: Mark your calendars for Friday, September 4th (after school until 5:30 PM). More details will follow soon.
Earning House Points: Students will earn points throughout the school year through class participation, pass-off tests, and special team challenges.
New Student Progress Platform: We are working on a brand-new online platform where students can log in to view the live House leaderboard, check their team's points, and track their individual progress on instrument skills. So Excited for this!
The Grand Finale: Everything culminates in our end-of-year House Social, and the House with the most points at the end of the year wins an Ice Cream Party too!

In case you missed our previous update, Mr. Spencer Katz has accepted an exciting new role as band director at his alma mater, Churchill High School! We want to extend a huge thank you to him for his incredible dedication to our program, and we are cheering him on as he takes this next step.
With change comes incredible new energy, and we are absolutely thrilled to officially introduce our new Associate Band Director, Mrs. Celeste Astorga!
Mrs. Astorga earned her Bachelorβs Degree in Music Education from UTSA and has been teaching both high school and middle school band since 2016. Her primary instrument is the trombone, and she specializes heavily in brass and percussion pedagogyβso our sections are in fantastic hands! She has a deep passion for helping young musicians grow, and our students are going to absolutely thrive under her direction.
