Our Beginning
In 2020, Dr. Nancy Paxton-Wilson led a Creative Inquiry course at Clemson University titled "Narratives of the Incarcerated." A huge goal of this project was to collaborate with the incarcerated men at Phillips State Prison in Buford, Ga, and create a continuing dialogue. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, this was not possible. In April of 2022, Dr. Paxton-Wilson and a few students commenced putting in the work to create a new organization at Clemson that could continue the work that her students started in 2020. CHPI teaches and tutors a weekly class at Greenville Detention Center in Greenville, SC. In Fall 2023, Dr. Paxton-Wilson's Creative Inquiry course will be reintroduced in a revised form to spearhead a campus-wide initiative to create a permanent prison education program at Clemson University.
Common Good Atlanta was created by Sarah Higinbotham in 2008 when she began teaching courses at Phillips State Prison. After gaining support, Common Good Atlanta was born and created educational opportunities across Georgia, including at Metro Reentry Facility, Whitworth Women's Facility, and Burruss Correctional.
Common Good Atlanta offers us the opportunity to go into Phillips State Prison to meet with the men taking classes there. We are so grateful for their support!
