The purpose of this study is to identify the major relevant factors that go into decision-making regarding the management and monitoring of non-native invasive species in the Southeastern states. The main objective is to develop decision matrices for forest health professionals in state agencies to use when a non-native insect or pathogen that does not fall under the USDA's umbrella of quarantine (non-regulated) is detected, or when a regulated species is released from federal quarantine status.
USDA Forest Service R8 Grant #: 24-DG-11083150-107
Key Points:
Eligible participants are adults (>18 years old) currently employed (including self-employed) in a position that includes the management of non-native non-regulated insect and pathogen pests of forests. Invasive plants are not being considered in this study.
Participation is voluntary, and the only alternative is to not participate. Once you start the survey, you may stop at any time. You will not be punished in any way if you decide not to be in the study or to stop taking part in the study.
Future semi-structured interviews and focus groups will also be made available but are not required to take part in the survey portion of the study. Interviews and focus groups will be variable in length depending on interest and availability.
We will not collect any personal identifiable information (PII) unless volunteered by you, and all data will be de-identified prior to analyses and sharing.
We expect to disseminate the anonymous survey by Summer 2024 and set up times for interviews and focus groups around the same time.
We plan to use already-established opportunities like the 2024 Southern Forest Health Work Conference in Greenville, SC to conduct these interviews and focus groups.
Click the interest form button above to let us know you want to take part in the study.
Your part in the study will be to respond to a brief survey asking a number of questions about the barriers you face when managing non-regulated non-native insect and pathogen pests of forests. Future semi-structured interviews and focus groups will also be made available but are not required to take part in the survey portion of the study.
If you would like to participate in the survey and/or another part of the study, or if you have any questions or concerns about the study, please contact Drs. Jess Hartshorn (jhartsh@clemson.edu) and/or Dave Coyle (dcoyle@clemson.edu).
