Welcome to a new school year! The 4th grade class meets once a week on Wednesday afternoons from 1:05-2:55 p.m. in the BPE library. Check back for highlights of class activities and events throughout the year.
Thanksgiving STEAM Challenge: The students used their creative problem solving and collaboration skills to create structures for Pilgrims and Wampanoags based on specific design challenges. They created a pilgrim house and wetu, compared the similarities and differences in these structures and how they met the needs of each group ofd people. Afterwards, they shared their results with the class and reflected on ways to improve their design by using reinforcements to strengthen weak materials. They also learned the importance of using good collaboration skills by listening to everyone's ideas when working in team challenges to accomplish their goal.
N.A.S.A. Touchdown Challenge- The team's challenge was to design and build a spaceship lander with a shock absorbing system that will protect two “astronauts” when they land on the moon. The teams tested their moon lander from drops of various heights and discovered how different forces affect the design and planning of their structure and explored the principles of kinetic and potential energy.
Help Harry STEAM Challenge: The teams worked together using the power of S.T.E.A.M. and collato brainstorm ideas and use creative problem solving to build a tall, stable perch at least 6 inches tall and 3 inches wide to help Harry (the friendly monster) see safely over our classroom. Afterwards, they reflected on the strategy they used to solve the problem, what they learned and how this could be applied to a future problem solving activity.
