Collaborate with Gemini in Google Docs
In Gmail, you can ask Gemini to:
Summarize an email thread.
Suggest responses to an email thread.
Find information from previous emails.
Find information from your Google Drive files.
Important: This feature is currently available on desktop.
On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
To make the side panel bigger, click Expand.
To go back to its original size, click Collapse.
At the bottom of the panel, you can select from suggested prompts or write your own.
Press Enter.
After Gemini generates content, on the side panel, you can:
Generate new text or image: Click Retry .
Add the suggested content to the document: Click Insert .
Before you click Insert , place your cursor where you want the content to be inserted in your document.
Refine the generated text or image: Write a new prompt.
For long answers, you can:
Show all of the suggested content: Click View more .
Show less: Click View less .
To close the panel, click Close .
On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini .
When you open a document that has text, on the side panel, you’ll find a summary of your document.
To get a summary of your document, ask Gemini.
Examples:
“Summarize this document.”
“Explain this document like I'm 5 years old.”
To summarize a specific section of your document:
i. Highlight the text.
ii. On the side panel, ask Gemini to “Summarize this text.”
You can also:
Add the text to your document: Click Insert.
Find a different version: Click Retry .
Send feedback about the suggested text: Click Good suggestionor Bad suggestion.
On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
On the side panel, select a prompt or create your own.
Press Enter.
Generate text and refine it.
Examples:
“Write an announcement email about a new feature.”
“Make the announcement more fun.”
You can also:
Add the text to your document: Click Insert.
Find a different version: Click Retry.
Send feedback about the suggested text: Click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion.
You can ask Gemini to generate images in Docs.
On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
On the side panel, create your own prompt.
Example: “Create an image of a dog with glasses.”
On the image that you like, you can hover over to:
Insert an image: Click Insert.
Find similar images: Click Show more.
You can also:
Find more images: At the bottom, click Show more.
Change your prompt: Click Edit prompt.
Send feedback about the generated images: At the bottom, click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion.
You can use Gemini to reference files from your Drive to generate responses in Docs.
On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
On the side panel, ask questions about your Drive files.
Example: “What are the main points of: Meeting Notes: Core Team sync.”
To check which files were used, at the bottom of the response, click Sources.
You can also:
Add the text to your document: Click Insert.
Generate a new suggestion: Click Retry.
Send feedback about the suggested text: Click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion.
You can ask Gemini to reference emails to generate responses.
On your computer, open a document from Google Docs.
At the top right, click Ask Gemini.
On the side panel, ask questions about your Gmail emails.
Example: “Catch me up on the latest Monthly Review emails.”
To check which emails were used, at the bottom of the response, click Sources.
You can also:
Add the suggested content to the document: Click Insert.
Generate a new suggestion: Click Retry.
Send feedback about the suggested text: Click Good suggestion or Bad suggestion.
To remove all generated output that you haven’t imported to the presentation, clear your Gemini history.
You can clear your conversation history on the side panel at any time. To clear the conversation history:
At the top right of the Gemini in Slides side panel, click Clear history .
In the pop-up window, click Clear.
You’ll also lose your conversation history:
If you refresh your browser.
If you close and reopen the presentation.
If your computer goes offline.
