How to select content using a variety of tools and methods
In order to edit your artwork, you need to select it. You learned how to select artwork in a variety of ways, including selecting content with similar appearance properties, adding or removing from a selection, isolating content, and more.
Select similar content
To select content that shares formatting, select content with the Selection tool and then choose Select > Same > attribute (Fill Color, for instance).
Add or remove from the selection
To deselect content or add content to a selection, Shift-click the content.
Enter Isolation mode to focus on the content
With the Selection tool selected, double-click content to enter Isolation mode so you can focus on the selected content.
Select multiple anchor points
Select the Direct Selection tool in the Toolbar and click to select artwork. You can then see the anchor points for the artwork.
Select the Lasso tool by clicking and holding the Direct Selection tool in the Toolbar and then selecting the Lasso tool from the menu.
Drag around the anchor points you want to select.
View outlines to select artwork more easily
To make it easier to select content, choose View > Outline to temporarily show the artwork with black strokes and no fills. To show the artwork with color again, choose View > Preview (or GPU Preview).

How and why to lock, group, and hide artwork
Make it simpler to select and edit content by locking, grouping, and hiding artwork.
Hide content to make selections
To make selecting other artwork simpler, hide selected artwork by choosing Object > Hide > Selection, or pressing Option+3 (macOS) or Alt+3 (Windows) on the keyboard.
To show all hidden artwork, choose Object > Show All.
Lock content to make selections
To lock selected artwork, choose Object > Lock > Selection.
View artwork in Outline mode
To facilitate selecting content, choose View > Outline to show the artwork as outlines without fills.
To show the artwork with the original appearance, choose View > Preview (or GPU Preview).
Group artwork
To group selected content, click the Group button in the Properties panel.
Select content in the group
If you need to select content within a group, double-click the group with the Selection tool to enter Isolation mode.
To exit Isolation mode, press the Escape key.

Different methods for transforming artwork
There are a lot of ways to transform artwork in Illustrator, including flipping, rotating, shearing, and reflecting. You explored different types of transformations while assembling final artwork.
Flip content
You can flip selected artwork by clicking either the Flip Along Vertical Axis button or the Flip Along Horizontal Axis button in the Properties panel.
Rotate content
Rotate selected content by moving the Selection tool pointer just off a corner of the selected bounding box.
When the rotate arrows appear, drag to rotate. Press the Shift key as you drag if you want to snap the rotation to 45 degrees.
Reflect content around a specified point
With the artwork selected, select the Reflect tool in the Toolbar.
(Optional) Click the artwork to set the reflect-around point.
Drag to reflect the artwork. As you drag, press the Shift key to constrain the artwork to 45 degrees. When finished, release the mouse button and then the key.

How to use the Shape Builder tool and Pathfinder effects to combine shapes in different ways
An effective way to create more complex artwork is to combine simpler artwork in different ways using the Shape Builder tool and Pathfinder effects.
Combine shapes with the Shape Builder tool
Select the shapes you want to combine.
Select the Shape Builder tool in the Toolbar. The Shape Builder tool lets you combine or remove shapes you select.
Drag across shapes to combine them.
Remove shapes with the Shape Builder tool
To remove parts of shapes, press the Option key (macOS) or the Alt key (Windows) and click or drag across the artwork.
Combine shapes with Pathfinder effects
Pathfinder effects allow you to combine shapes in more ways than the Shape Builder tool. With multiple shapes selected, you can apply a Pathfinder effect by clicking the effect in the Properties panel.
To see more Pathfinder effects, click More Options in the Pathfinder section of the Properties panel.

How to crop content by applying a mask
A mask is a vector shape that you use to hide parts of other content. The shape that is to become the mask must be on top of the content that you mask.
Mask the content
Ensure that the vector shape to be the mask is in front of the content to be masked.
Select the vector shape and the content to be masked.
Choose Object > Clipping Mask > Make. The selected content becomes a clip group.
Edit the mask or content
There are a couple different ways to edit a mask or the content being masked.
With the clip group selected, click the Edit Clipping Path button at the top of the Properties panel to select and edit the mask, or click the Edit Contents button to select and edit the masked content.
Double-click the clip group with the Selection tool selected to enter Isolation mode. Then select the mask and the content separately.

Add creative brush strokes
Brushes are applied to the stroke of vector artwork in Illustrator.
Choose Window > Brushes to open the Brushes panel, which contains default brushes and any brushes created in the document.
Select the Selection tool and click to select vector artwork. In the Brushes panel, click a brush in the list to apply it.
Change the stroke weight in the Properties panel; the brush size changes with it.
Illustrator comes with a series of brush libraries. Click Brush Libraries Menu at the bottom of the Brushes panel to choose a brush library. With the library open as a panel, click to apply a brush to selected artwork.

Add effects
Click the Selection tool and click the artwork to select it.
To apply an effect, click Choose An Effect in the Properties panel. In the Effect menu that appears, choose an option such as Effect > Distort & Transform > Pucker & Bloat to apply the effect. In the dialog box that appears, edit the effect options and click OK.
To edit an effect, click the name of the effect in the Appearance panel. (To open the Appearance panel, choose Window > Appearance or click More Options in the Appearance section of the Properties panel.)

About effects
Under the Effect menu, see the various Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop effects. Illustrator effects are vector effects. Photoshop effects are raster effects.
To apply an effect, click Choose An Effect in the Properties panel.
To edit an effect, click the name of the effect in the Properties panel to open the effect options in a dialog box.
To open the Appearance panel, choose Window > Appearance or click More Options in the Appearance section of the Properties panel. The Appearance panel shows what is selected in your document and the appearance attributes applied to that artwork. To temporarily hide an effect applied to artwork, click the eye icon to the left of the effect name in the Appearance panel. To edit an effect, click the name of the effect in the Appearance panel.
