The STEAM work at Memorial Park Middle School is led through a group of innovating teachers on the STEAM Team. This leadership group helps to develop the next steps for our school based on data collected. While the pandemic postponed many planned opportunities for our students, we have emerged with enhanced technology integration and a better handle on teaching from varying modalities. At Memorial Park Middle School, teachers strive to work in a cross-curricular fashion to ensure STEAM and PBL experiences are integrated experiences for students. We have been fortunate to receive the Magnet School Assistant Program grant to help fund new programming and update existing technology, we are working to make sure that we are able to sustain programming well beyond the end of the grant period. Student and Parent feedback at our school is collected and analyzed on a yearly basis to help inform our action plans. Teachers receive feedback and support from peers, instructional coaching staff, and administration throughout the year to help improve their STEAM focused activities.
Through regular feedback opportunities, 100% of Memorial Park staff have the opportunity and do provide feedback to our STEAM leadership team. This feedback informs the direction of our program and helps ensure all staff members contribute to the STEAM culture we have created. Support of building efforts also continues at the district level by input from district curriculum, technology, and leadership offices.
Our school and district has created and implemented a continuous learning plan to ensure STEAM learning will occur regardless of modality. District support and building technology coordinators support teachers in utilizing technology to make learning accessible for in-person, blended, or virtual learning.
Memorial Park has scheduled weekly collaboration after-school between teachers for the purpose of planning integrated STEAM lessons and opportunities as an interdisciplinary team. Over the last two summers, Memorial Park has utilized summer professional learning and collaboration to springboard the work and planning that occurs during the school year.
At both the district and school levels, there are five year sustainability plans in place that includes a plan for curriculum, technology and professional learning. Within those plan, specific technology items, curriculum and professional learning are identified as areas in need of sustaining and the identified plan for each is provided in detail. These plans ensure STEAM program development continues through the duration of the certification time period.
The S-STEM survey (measured in Quarter 1/Quarter 4) and other career interest surveys embedded within our district College and Career Readiness programs are utilized to guide our STEAM program. Being responsive to students interests and needs helps build overall engagement within the program.
Through a VARIETY of ways, we work to include multiple stakeholders at various levels within our STEAM program. This includes community involvement in a variety of STEAM learning activities. We engage parents through regular communication via newsletters. We garner parent feedback through parent surveys. Through all of these efforts we are able to promote and grow our STEAM program.
Memorial Park offers numerous elective courses aligned to our STEAM focus, including options in art, dance, music, computer science and engineering. In grades 7 and 8, students opt-in to elective courses of their choice and in 6th grade, students have the opportunity to participate in a STEAM block of elective offerings.
