Sight Words

The Fry Sight Word List was developed by Dr. Edward Fry. It is comprised of 1,000 of the most common words to appear in reading materials used in Grades 3-9. Learning all 1,000 words in the Fry list would equip a child to read about 90% of the words in a typical book, newspaper, or website.

These are words that children should know immediately upon sight. They should not have to be sounded out.  Children learn these words through frequent exposure and repeated practice. Practice of snap words at home is essential for a child to successfully master the list.

Contact your child's teacher to find out which words your child needs to practice.  It is most effective to practice 5-10 words at a time until mastery, and then continue with the next 5-10 words. Practicing too many words at a time leads to frustration, and won't be much fun for your child, or for you!
