Phonemic Awareness versus Phonics

Intervention Phonics Scope & Sequence

Order of Phonics

Intervention follows this scope and sequence of reinforcing letter recognition and sounds; however, your grade level teacher may be following a slightly different sequence.

Feel free to contact me or your classroom teacher to identify which letter sounds your child needs practice with.

Letter Strokes

Students often struggle in reading and spelling, because they have incorrect letter formation. Start with a focus in mastering lowercase letters first, because most of what we read and write in are lowercase letters. By teaching the correct letter formation, we can prevent bad habits such as b/d and p/q reversals or incorrectly capitalizing within a middle of a word.

Correct print letter formation is also important for when students learn cursive (this is a California standard). The order of strokes and letter formation are similar to print. Order matters!

Phonic Sounds

Below are videos to help you correctly pronounce individual letter sounds. It's important that your student builds awareness as to how the mouth and tongue are moving to form each letter. These act as clues to which letter to use when spelling. This helps to prevent students from misspelling words as they sound them out and quickly identify which letters to use when spelling.

This video provides the mouth movement, sound, and a keyword to help your child recall the appropriate letter sound. All are correct except "R."
