At the end of each grading period (1st Quarter, 1st Semester, 3rd Quarter, 2nd Semester), each school has a small 10-day window to figure out each student-athlete's GPA and classify each one as Eligible, Ineligible, or on Academic Probation for the following grading period by a date, called the Date of Determination, set forth by our local governing body, the Mission Valley Athletic League (MVAL). Once the Date of Determination has passed for that grading period, each student's eligibility status is set in stone and will not change until the next Date of Determination, regardless of any "updated grades" or "progress reports". There are no exceptions to this as each school, including American HS, falls under the jurisdiction of the MVAL, North Coast Section (NCS), and California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) and are bound by the Date of Determination.
Here are the academic eligibility standards:
1. The successful completion of a minimum of twenty units of academic work during the grading period preceding the sport and a 2.0 grade point average or higher. (ELIGIBLE)
2. Students falling below a 2.0 grade point average but above a 1.50 grade point average will be placed on academic probation for the next nine week grading period OR a student receiving an F grade in any class is placed on probation no matter what his/her grade point average. (PROBATION)
3. A student will be deemed ineligible if he or she is under a 1.50 grade point average, has 2 or more F grades,is on probation for two consecutive grading periods, or fulfills both the criteria of academic probation. (INELIGIBLE)
Unfortunately, all students, regardless of IEP's and 504 plans, are bound by eligibility standards set forth by the Mission Valley Athletic League, North Coast Section, and California Interscholastic Federation.
American High School's Athletic Code has been developed in accordance with those standards and the school does not have the ability to make exceptions.
