Hair, Accessories & Other Considerations
Hair
If you have long hair, please make sure that it is styled in a way that allows you to see the conductor and other members of the orchestra; please keep out of your face/eyes
No hats while performing
Accessories
Smart watches, watch sounds and alarm sounds should be turned off for dress rehearsals and performances to eliminate distractions
Phones should be turned off for all rehearsals and concerts
Jewelry:
Please be mindful that you are still able to play with your jewelry (rings, earrings, necklaces, bracelets). For violinists and violists, often big/long earrings can get in the way on our left side. For cellists and bassists: bracelets worn on the left wrist can hit or damage our instrument while shifting.
PLEASE be mindful that your jewelry is not noisy (many bracelets that clank when your arm is moved, for example).
Considerations:
Are you able to play in your concert black outfit?
Can you move your arms as needed in your shirt or jacket?
Does your outfit have sequins or beading that may scratch your instrument?
Are you able to walk, bend over, and carry your instrument & backpack EASILY while wearing your outfit?
If wearing heels, consider bringing more comfortable shoes (black or nonblack) for before and after the performance
Please consider an outfit that has pockets - musicians often have to carry a lot of belongings onto stage.
Note: A decent pair of dress pants/slacks, a dress shirt and dress shoes can be multi-use and a valuable purchase. You may find yourself wearing these items to future job interviews, internships, work, professional opportunities, funerals, etc.
