Important information: Senior students need to fill out either the FAFSA or Dream Act application by March 2nd every year to be considered for financial aid- only one application is required! While March 2nd is the California priority deadline, the earlier you submit your FAFSA or Dream Act the better. June 30th is the federal deadline. All applications are submitted online only via a secure website (please see below). The FAFSA and the Dream Act are comprised of 2 main parts: part 1 and part 2: part 1 is primarily the students basic information, and part 2 is the parent(s) info and tax returns from 2 years prior. Submitting a FAFSA application or Dream Act Application is highly encouraged and recommended prior to graduation.
1.) Click: New to the FAFSA Process? Start here
2.) I am the student and want to access the FAFSA form will be pre-clicked for you. Click: Create an FSA ID, which will take you to another page to make your FSA ID account. Later on, your parent/guardian will need to make an FSA ID account as well. The FSA ID account is a secure account used to confirm your information and log into the FAFSA.
3.) After you made your FSA ID, return to the original FAFSA page that prefaced the FSA ID. Click the blue rectangle button that reads Log in to Continue. Log in with your student FSA ID information.
4.) Answer the questions that follow, and be sure to enter in your personal email as opposed to your student email. Make sure you click on the correct year you are applying for: 2022-2023 for next school year, when you will be in college
5.) The questions are comprised of your basic information as a student- when you will be graduating from HS, what degree you are working toward (1st bachelors degree), and all the colleges you have or will apply to for this year.
For example: It is December 2024 and Ms. Yee is filling out her FAFSA. She is a senior at FHS, and has applied to Sacramento State and UC Davis. She plans to apply for Solano Community College, University of Nevada, and Napa Valley College for Fall 2022. She needs to put down ALL of those colleges onto her FAFSA application, so that each of the schools can receive and process her application, even though she will only attend 1 of those schools.
5.) When you get to the Parent section, hand your laptop over to your parent, and let them know that they will need to enter their tax returns from 2 years prior (this year you would need to enter the 2023 taxes, because you are applying for the Fall 2025 school year).
Starting and completing your financial aid application takes on average 2-3 hours if done in one sitting. Although it can be a tedious process, the FAFSA or Dream Act can provide you with the opportunity to receive helpful grant money for college!
