Careers in the Skilled Trades
Not every student plans on attending college after high school. Some choose to go directly into the workforce, some attend vocational schools and training, and still others choose paths like travel or parenthood. For those considering career or technical training, here are some resources about skilled workers in the trades. All of the unions below have some form of apprenticeship program available locally, all are free (if you work for the union after you finish), and have an "earn as you learn" format where trainees get both schooling and on-the-job experience simultaneously (and are paid for their work).
The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) is the largest union of electrical workers in the world. Here in California, their members go through a JATC (Joint Apprenticeship Training Committee) apprenticeship program for their type of electrical work.
PG&E outside linemen in our area are part of Local 1245 based in Vacaville, but they are trained via the California-Nevada JATC.
Inside wiremen in our area and other types of outside linemen are generally served by Local 180 based in Napa. Their paid apprenticeship program is handled by the Napa-Solano JATC.
Apprenticeship Applications are generally accepted in December and early January, so please contact them promptly if you are considering applying!
The Sheet Metal Workers Union provides skilled tradesmen for everything from architectural metal panels to HVAC to kitchen installations to industrial work to CAD services and metal fabrication. They are part of the larger SMART union (Sheet Metal, Air, Rail, Transportation)
Local 104 covers most of the state of California, and they even have a training facility here in Fairfield. Their paid apprenticeship program is handled in the Bay Area by the Bay Area Industry Training Fund (this is also where you apply to become an apprentice).
Aptitude testing often fills up a month or two in advance, and the next opportunity to test in Fairfield will be in October! (The Septembertesting date is full).
The Nor Cal Carpenters Union is a part of the larger International Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. More than just carpentry, the UBC encompasses carpenters, millwrights, lathers, pile drivers, millworkers & cabinet makers, framers, floor coverers, and more.
Local 46 is here in Fairfield, plus there is a Nor Cal Carpenters Union training center here, too. For more information and to apply for the "earn as you learn" apprenticeship program, check the Nor Cal Carpenters Training website.
This organization accepts applications all year round, but they purge applications every two years, so you may need to apply more than once.
The United Association of Journeymen and Apprentices of the Plumbing and Pipefitting Industry represents members who are plumbers, metalworkers, welders, pipefitters, sprinkler fitters, HVACR Service Technicians, Pipeliners, and more.
Local 343 represents Solano County and Napa County, and is located in Vacaville. They conduct their own JATC apprenticeship program here, in compliance with UA requirements.
This organization accepts applications only in November, during specific windows, so check for dates and times.
Sample tests and other requirements are listed here.

Established in November 1993, NCCT is a non-profit pre-apprenticeship construction training program that helps prepare individuals for entry into the various building trades apprenticeship programs; the goal of Northern California Construction Training Inc. to provide innovative, practical, and top-quality training and education that will produce a well-balanced and prepared workforce to area employers and work to reduce recidivism within our communities.
Many potential construction workers are not aware of the career opportunities available to them. This is especially true for women and people of color. From its inception to today, NCCT strives to make well-paying careers in construction available to anyone with the desire to complete our Program and participate in apprenticeship training.
Construction Building Trades Apprenticeship programs all have different requirements. Our program’s priority populations are primarily those that may not meet the minimum standards of the local building trades apprenticeship programs or are seeking training that will lead to better employment opportunities. These participants include ex-offenders, displaced homemakers, long-term unemployed people, underemployed people, students, former foster youth, dislocated workers, and apprenticeship applicants who have failed to meet entrance requirements.
NCCT is the bridge between our participants and the local trades and can help with the industry-specific curriculum approved by the Division of Apprenticeship Standards and hands-on training that our participants do not already have or would not receive otherwise.
This program has open enrollment for adults via their "general population" courses. You must be 18 years old and meet certain other requirements, including having reliable transportation. Check this page for locations and classes.
