What is a Historically Black College or University? 'The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: “…any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency or association determined by the Secretary [of Education] to be a reliable authority as to the quality of training offered or is, according to such an agency or association, making reasonable progress toward accreditation.” HBCUs offer all students, regardless of race, an opportunity to develop their skills and talents. The Common Black College Application (commonblackcollegeapp.com) was created with the purpose of allowing students to apply to HBCUs in one easy, affordable step. Interested students can apply to over 60 HBCUs for a one time fee of $20, which differs from the CommonApp and other college application websites, where you pay per school. The objective of the California Community Colleges Transfer Guarantee to Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) Program is the development of transfer pathways that will facilitate a smooth transition for students from all of the California Community Colleges to partnered HBCUs. These pathways will simplify the transfer process and reduce students’ need to take unnecessary courses, thereby shortening the time to degree completion and saving student costs.

CAL-HBCU Transfer Grant

The Cal-HBCU Transfer Grant (Cal-HBCU) Program awards up to $5,000 to participating students who transfer from California Community Colleges to eligible, partnered Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

How To Apply

STEP 1: Submit a FAFSA or CADAA.

STEP 2: Submit a Cal-HBCU Transfer Grant (Cal-HBCU) Program Application to the Cal-HBCU Program Team at calhbcu@csac.ca.gov.

· Fall 2024-25 transfer students must submit an application by October 31, 2024.

· Spring 2024-25 transfer students must submit an application by January 31, 2025.

This grant is made possible by the California College Access Tax Credit Fund. Taxpayers and businesses who would like to make a contribution and receive a 50 percent tax credit, may visit www.treasurer.ca.gov/cefa/catc/ for more information.
