Asynchronous Instruction

For families who are not comfortable with sending their students back to school during this pandemic, Fruitvale ISD is offering a virtual option using the asynchronous format. The goal of this plan is to offer students and families flexibility when deciding the best course of action for their education. This plan is TEKS based and continues Fruitvale ISDs rich tradition of high academic standards and student achievement. If we find it necessary as a district to shut down instruction, all students will follow this asynchronous format.

Instructional Models

Fruitvale ISD will be implementing three models to deliver instruction for 2020 - 2021 school year. In-person, virtual, and hybrid. Students who decide to receive their instruction at home will fall under asynchronous instruction which will allow self-paced instruction where students will receive instruction and complete assignments on their own time. They will have opportunities throughout the school day to interact with the virtual instructor through zoom or on the telephone.

  • In-Person Model: This will run like a typical school day with classes starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at 3:30 for all grade levels.

  • Virtual Model: This will allow students to receive instruction from home with the option of attending tutorials on Saturdays. This model will have a virtual instructor that facilitates assignments from the regular classroom teacher to the students at home. She will also be there to help students with their assignments and answer any other questions that might arise.

  • Hybrid Model: This will allow students to complete their school work from home and allow those students to attend school to participate in athletics, band, FFA, etc. This option is available for 6th - 12th grade students only.

All instructional model students will use Canvas as their Learning Management System (LMS). In order to receive credit for attendance each day, these students must engage by showing progress on assignments in Canvas, progress between student and teacher, or completion of assignments that day. If none of those criteria are met, the student will not receive credit for attendance that day. Virtual and Hybrid students will have an instructor available to answer questions and get assistance with assignments. In Person tutorial sessions will be available on Saturdays with an instructor.

TEKS Aligned Instructional Materials and Assessments

Fruitvale ISD will use various resources that are aligned to the TEKS for all models of instruction. This will ensure that students will receive the same high quality TEKS aligned instruction and content regardless if they are learning at school or at home. Periodic assessments will also be implemented to ensure that students are mastering the TEKS and making expected growth.

Learning Management System

For students who are participating in the virtual or hybrid model instruction will be delivered through Canvas. Teacher made videos will be embedded to provide instruction to students and to make them feel like they are sitting in the classroom. Assignments will also be included in Canvas to allow students work at their own pace. Using periodic assessments learning will be individualized for each student to allow them to fill in gaps from previous lessons or to move ahead when concepts are mastered.

Virtual Teacher

Fruitvale ISD will be employing a virtual teacher this school year to act as a liaison between families and students and the regular classroom teacher. The virtual teacher will be available each day for virtual students to check in with and receive help on assignments. The virtual teacher will take attendance each day for virtual students based on the asynchronous rules outlined by TEA.

Students with Disabilities

Fruitvale ISD Special Education, ESL and 504 staff will work with teachers and students to make sure that all accommodations are being provided through virtual learning. ARDs and 504 plans will be adapted to eliminate any barriers students and families may encounter through virtual learning.

Daily Student Engagement

Under asynchronous instruction students will be considered engaged and therefore receive credit for instruction as long as they meet one of the three following criteria:

  1. Completion of assignments, projects, assessments, etc. on a daily basis in Canvas.

  2. Interaction that includes help with assignments or tutorials with the virtual instructor on a daily basis.

  3. Progress on assignments in Canvas.

In order to track engagement the virtual instructor will mark students present or absent based on their engagement in Gradebook.

Students will also be given the opportunity to zoom into classroom meetings each day.

Tracking Academic Progress

Students who are using the virtual model will receive the same assignments and assessments as students are at school school in-person. Grades will be given to students through Gradebook and they will receive progress reports and report cards on the same schedule as in-person students. The same goes for performance on classroom and district assessments.

Feedback

Feedback will be provided to students on a daily basis. Students who are falling behind or are not meeting expected growth standards will be given the opportunity to attend tutorials either virtually or in-person on Saturdays. They will also receive progress reports every four and a half weeks and report cards every nine weeks.

Educator Supports

Fruitvale ISD will provide training to all teachers and instructional aides on how to provide asynchronous instruction. We will also have a dedicated virtual instructor who will work with students and families that choose the virtual or hybrid model. Teachers will be taught how to video their lessons and how to embed those in Canvas. They will also be trained on using Canvas and creating assignments and assessments. We will also provide training throughout the school year to provide training to teachers on implementing asynchronous instruction.

Communication

Fruitvale ISD uses a variety of means to communicate with students and families:

  • Email through School Messenger

  • District Facebook Page

  • Email through TxEIS

  • Canvas

  • Student Email

  • School Website: www.fruitvaleisd.com

Students and families that opt for virtual or hybrid learning will have a dedicated staff member or virtual instructor they can contact daily with questions on assignments, assessments, or any other questions or concerns that arise. The virtual instructor will also be available to train students and families on how to use any of the tools available for virtual or hybrid instruction including Canvas and chromebooks. Students will also have daily opportunities to zoom into their regular homeroom or advisory. There will also be a helpline set up for students and families to call in and receive support.

Virtual Support

Each student that opts for virtual or hybrid instruction will be provided an ipad or chromebook. Families without internet access will be provided with a wifi hotspot or access to Fruitvale ISD’s wifi network to connect to the internet.
