Physical Distancing

Physical or social distancing is another critical tool to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and other illnesses spread by droplets. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and MDPH recommend a 6’ distance between individuals. While the DESE guidance allows for 3’ distance where 6’ is not feasible, the FRSU38 schools has adopted the 6 foot distance as our minimum for safe physical distancing.

Classroom set up has been modified in all schools to allow 6 foot distance between students when seated in the classroom. Modifications have also been completed for shared spaces throughout each school. Cohorts and assigned seating in classrooms will support maintenance of the 6 foot distance. Assigned seating and reduced capacity will also be utilized on school buses and vans to support safe physical distance during travel to and from school. Siblings or other household members will be permitted to sit next to each other when riding to and from school.

Physical distancing for physical education and outdoor recess activities follow guidance for athletics and recreational sports. In most cases the minimum distance is 10’.
