Homework is scored using a 2-1-0 scale. Assignments complete and on time will earn 2 points (points are not deducted for mistakes- always try your best).
Late or incomplete work will earn 1 point (it is up to the student to show Mr. Miller or Mrs. Starke late assignments)
Missing assignments will result in 0 points.
Majority of the weekly homework assignments will be from our Bridges Home Connection workbook. Pages will remain in the workbook as an additional reference for the students and kept in the classroom when not being used. Please DO NOT remove any pages from the workbooks.
9/3 First Day for students
9/4 HR activities
9/8 First formal Math class- workbooks were distributed and we learned how to play 13 circles.
9/9 Discussed HW (review from 4th grade: use of ( ) & the double double strategy), introduced the Product Game & started preparing for our September Calendar activity. HW- Home Connection p. 1 & 2, due Friday.
9/10 Student partners played the Product Game and then we introduced the September Calendar activity.
9/11 After some X practice we checked HW, solved the next 3 calendar cards (trying to get caught up). We ended working in our student books focusing on strategies of the Product Game.
9/14 Brad's Baseball Shop was introduced- he's going to help us understand volume. HW- Home Connection p. 3 & 4, Due Wednesday.
9/15 We continued to complete our September Calendar activities which relate money & time with decimals & fractions. We also practiced solving X equations using the Half-Double & Double-Double strategies.
9/16 After checking HW, students completed their first in class graded Check Point, which was VERY similar to their HW. No HW assigned.
9/17 & 9/18 NWEA MAP Math Assessment- District Initiative.
9/21 OFF- Yom Kippur
9/22 Today we focused on volume, using cubes to model our volume equations (L x W x H)
9/23 After previewing the HW, we explored surface area - How much cardboard do we need to make a box? HW- Home Connection p. 5 & 6, due Friday. Do not skip the Challenge.
9/24 & 25 We are continuing to work with surface area and volume.

9/28 Today we learned about Prime & Composite Numbers and how to play the Multiples Game. HW- Home Connection p. 7 & 8. Due Wednesday.
9/29 After reviewing surface area and volume, students practiced their skills in their student books. We then completed a worksample. However, it will not be a Genesis grade. I will use it to guide my instruction.
9/30 We first checked HW and then previewed our next HW assignment: Home Connection p. 9 & 10, due Friday. We will solve the Challenge question together on Friday (students can give it a try if they want).
10/1 Today I introduced Partial Products, an alternative way to X larger numbers.
10/2 After checking HW, we did some reviewing, followed by a graded classwork Checkpoint assignment (Multiplication & Volume).
10/5 Ratio Tables are a great tool to use for a variety of situations; we reviewed them today. We also finished our checkpoint from Friday. HW: Home Connection p. 11 & 12, due Wednesday.
10/6 We did our last Layer-A-Day today (area & volume) and completed our first set from our October Calendar (3-D perspective). Students were then given time to practice their skills.
10/7 Home Connection p. 11 & 12 due today. P. 13 & 14, Due Friday. We learned a new game today- Beat the Calculator. Is your child's mind faster than a calculator?
10/8 After practicing how to create equations from text and solving our next calendar set, students found partners and played Beat the Calculator.
10/9 We continued with our October Calendar today and solved our 3rd set of mystery shapes, followed by checking HW. We then focused on solving division word problems using pictures, diagrams & equations. This is the last concept in Unit 1 so I expect to be testing next Thursday, 10/15 with Tuesday & Wednesday being review days. HAPPY FRIDAY!
1/12 We continued working with division today as well as starting a new activity- Carrot Weighing. HW- Home Connection p. 15 & 16, due Wednesday.
1/13 & 1/14 Unit 1 review- The Unit 1 pre-assessment was used as our review. It was sent home Wednesday with students to review for Thursday's unit test.
1/15 & 1/16 Unit 1 test
1/19 The start of Unit 2- adding and subtracting fractions. HW- Home Connection p. 21 & 22. Due Wednesday.
1/20 Monday we focused on Money and fractions. Today, we used clocks to solve fraction problems.
1/21 After checking HW and weighing our carrots, we practiced adding fractions using money & clocks as models. HW- Home Connection p. 23 & 24. Due Friday.
10/22 We learned a new game today to help us understand how to add fractions called Clock Fractions. Unit 1 tests were given to the students today. Please sign and return the cover sheet with the test by Monday.
