In third grade, we use the Writer’s Workshop model to help students grow as independent writers and effective communicators. Third grade is an exciting year where students learn to develop their own voice and strengthen their writing craft. This approach includes a mix of mini-lessons, small group work, independent writing, one-on-one conferences, and sharing sessions. In Writer’s Workshop, students will practice writing across a variety of genres, build stamina for sustained writing, and apply strategies to enhance their ideas, organization, and style. Teachers model all strategies so students can confidently apply them in their own writing.
Using Writer’s Workshop allows each child to progress at their own pace, gain confidence, and foster a lifelong love of writing. ✏️
Have your child:
Write letters/cards to family members and friends.
Create a shopping list before going to the store.
Write down directions for completing household chores or ways to care for your family pet(s).
Keep a journal to write down whatever they want to write about!
Create a book with a family member.
Play "Tell Me How?" to work on adding details to writing. In this game, you pretend not to know how to do something, and your child will describe it to you (verbally or through writing). Then, act out the steps exactly how they are said/written!
Create a family scrapbook.
