Battle of the Books Coaches Info - FAQs
When and where is the Frontier Battle?
The Frontier Battle is Monday, March 10 in the gym.
3rd Grade 8:10 - 9:00 AM
4th Grade 9:05 - 9:55 AM
5th Grade 10:10 - 11:00 AM
How many teams go to the District Battle? When and where is the District Battle?
The top 2 teams from each grade level will go on to represent Frontier at the District Battles. The District Battles are at Fred Tjardes School of Innovation on April 1st (3rd grade), April 2nd (4th grade), and April 3rd (5th grade). The start time is 4 PM.
Do all students attend the Frontier Battle?
Yes. Teachers and students in each grade level will watch the Frontier Battle. (Third graders watch the third-grade battle, fourth graders watch the fourth-grade battle, etc.)
Are guests allowed to attend the Frontier Battle?
Yes. Guests are welcome. Details about arrival times and other information will be available from our Security and Admin Team soon.
How many team members may participate during the Frontier Battle? at the District Battle?
All team members may participate in the Frontier Battle. At the District Battles, there are 3 rounds and only 4 students may participate in each round. (Teams with more than 4 students will have extra students "sit out" during a round as necessary. This is common and many teams from other schools will have more than 4 students, with some students needing to sit out each round.)
How do we access Practice Questions?
Practice questions are posted to the AK Battle of the Books website under "Coaches Corner". The documents are password-protected.
The password for the 2025 Practice Questions is 2025#SmallGreatThings
Why are some of the Practice Questions for books we haven't read?
The Practice Questions are provided by the Alaska BOB coordinators who use 12 books for their battle. Please ignore the Practice questions that aren't related to our 8 books.
May we have pizza or other food delivered for our meetings?
Yes. You may bring any food you like to share with the team. Please let me know if you will have food delivered so I may inform the front desk staff.
May we meet twice per week?
Yes, teams may meet twice per week beginning the week of February 23. Please send me an email if you would like to meet twice per week and which day you prefer.
How picky will the judges be in scoring the Titles and Authors?
Students must write the full title and author(s) to receive credit. Minor spelling mistakes will receive full credit. We will follow the District scoring guidelines HERE.
Are students allowed to listen to audiobooks?
Yes! I found some free Ebooks and audiobooks online.
THIS IS A VERY IMPORTANT PART OF THE COMPETITION.

Battle of the Books Coaches Info
OVERVIEW OF FRONTIER BOB COMPETITION:
All students will sit with their teams at separate tables. The tables are close in proximity, so students should practice whispering when discussing their answers.
Students will have one whiteboard, two markers (one for backup), and one eraser. No other materials are allowed.
Each time must assign a student to be The SCRIBE who records the team answer on the whiteboard.
THE TEAM SCRIBE MUST BE THE SAME FOR THE ENTIRE ROUND BUT MAY CHANGE BETWEEN ROUNDS (this is new).
Score Recorders will sit between 2 tables and will record scores for 2 teams.
The Judge and Timer will sit at a table facing the teams.
The Judge will read the question and the time will start at the end of the question.
Students have 30 seconds to discuss the answer.
After 30 seconds the timer will announce "Time" and the Scribe MUST IMMEDIATELY START writing the answer on the whiteboard.
ONCE THE SCRIBE STARTS WRITING ALL TALKING MUST STOP. This is important.
The Scribe has as much time as they need (within reason) to write the OFFICIAL Title and Author on the whiteboard.
Once all teams have finished writing, the judge will say "Teams, please show your answer."
The Scribe will hold up the whiteboard to show the Score Recorder, who will record the team score.
Teams may earn 0, 3 (correct author), 5 (correct title), or 8 points (correct author and title). No partial points are given.
Minor spelling errors will be counted as correct.
The full title and author must be written to count as correct. No partial points are given.
If a book has 2 authors listed, both must be written to receive points. No partial points are given.
We will have whiteboards/markers available for practice at the front desks when you check in this week. Please take one.
Please see Procedures for more details. (Note: These procedures need to be updated. Students do not need to read their answers aloud.)
The District competition is 3 rounds of 8 questions each. The Frontier competition may have 2 OR 3 rounds of 8 questions each (TBD).

2024-2025 Battle of the Books
The Battle of the Books is a reading motivation and comprehension program for 3rd-5th graders sponsored by Frontier Academy and District 6. The goals of the program are to encourage and recognize students who enjoy reading, broaden reading interests, increase reading comprehension, and promote academic excellence.
There are 3 competitions, one for each grade level, 3rd-5th. To prepare for the Battle, students read 8 books (listed below), meet with their team, discuss the books, and answer practice comprehension questions. During the Frontier Academy BOB, teams are asked comprehension questions about the books. Teams discuss the questions together and provide one team answer. It is not a race to answer first. All teams answer all questions. The 2 teams from each grade level with the most correct answers go on to represent Frontier Academy at the District BOB Competition.
