Hawaii Part II: The Water Adventures
September is the beginning of hurricane season, and we have been following the reports on Hurricane Lowell closely. Luckily, Maui wasn’t as affected by this as some of the other islands. We will be staying in Ka’anapali on the beach.
It’s Sunday September 13th, and it is quite cool outside. We have arrived at the condo in Maui, and it is very humid here. Even though it has been a very active hurricane season, the sea is calm and the skies are blue. It is 80 degrees during the day and only dropping a few degrees at night. September is turtle season and there is one on the beach outside our condo. Fun fact of Hawaii is that guests have to stay at least 10 feet from the sea turtles or risk getting a ticket.
Monday September 14th I got to go snorkeling in the ocean and went swimming in the pool. The ocean temperature is the same as the air temperature outside. The ocean waves were calm and there were no sharks but lots of colorful fish to see. There was a super long, baby-blue fish called a stick fish, and it was poking around looking for its favorite meal, little baby crabs. A sea turtle went by the coral just watching fish, but Green Sea Turtles are herbivores; they don’t eat any fish. I saw a sword fish swimming around in circles, and I was confused by his swimming in circles. It made me dizzy just looking at it. One of my deepest lessons is to remember that salt water does not taste good, so don’t try it! One must keep lips tight on the snorkel!
We weren’t done swimming yet! That night, I went for a night swim, and I saw a praying mantis floating in the pool. I accidentally grabbed it, but she did not appreciate my lifeguarding skills; she bit me, and I still have the mark today. Luckily, when I flipped out, she went flying back onto the sand, so I guess I was a good life guard after all. I saved her life, and I named her Bitey Bella... I just hope she remembers me.

Going to Hawaii
This will be my first time on a plane. It’s a six-hour flight to Maui and back. I am a bit scared and nervous, but I bet it is going to be fun. The first thing I am going to do is ziplining over the top of a jungle, go snorkeling with tropical fish, drink out of a coconut with an umbrella and a straw in it, go to a luau and try the pork, swim, and take the road to Hana. I am a little nervous about the plane crashing and getting stuck in the woods like the book Hatchet where Brian gets stuck in the forest. Of course, I won’t be flying over forest; I’ll be flying over water, and I would sink and run out of air because I can’t hold my breath for a long time. Still, I’m excited to go, and I will report more when I get to Hawaii. Since this is my first big trip, I’m worried about packing all the right stuff for an entire week. Of course, I’m interested in learning the original Hawaiian language, ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi, so that I can have a little conversation outside of the regular English.
