Goal setting and reflection helps students to be engaged in their learning process. Middle School Academy Connect classes have students complete weekly grade checks. Using the data, students reflect upon their progress and create weekly goals for success.
Teachers in 6th grade Academy Connect have students check their grades each week on our online gradebook system and reflect upon their progress using a Google Form.
They create micro-goals to recognize ways to improve their performance or identify the tasks they are completing that lead to success.
The final question on the first page asks if they are passing everything. They go to different pages of the form based on that answer.

If the students aren’t passing everything, they create a plan to recognize ways to improve their performance.
If they are passing everything, they come to a page to identify their strengths and the tasks they are completing that contribute to success.

The teacher uses an Add-On called Autocrat to automatically email students and parents with a template created in Google Slides.
The results from the form filter into a Google Sheet for the teacher.
How has this impacted student learning?
Since students are actively checking their grades, it's becoming a habit for them, and, since it emails both the students and their parents, they are being held more accountable for their grades. I've gotten a lot of awesome feedback from parents. I haven't gotten one negative response. In addition, I'll sometimes be included on a Reply All where they reply to their child with compliments.
One parent in particular said: You've been sick this week and did such an awesome job of catching up. Way to take responsibility!
Would you change anything?
Honestly, the only thing I would change would be to implement this right away. I started during the second quarter and would want to start closer to the beginning of the year." They then added, "Actually, I did change something. After the initial use, I added in a section where the students create a tutorial schedule using their own availability and they reference the teacher's tutorials using a chart I've created."
Have you received feedback from students or staff on this practice?
Yes. Other staff members who have noticed a change in student behavior from this practice. I've been told by other teachers that it has been useful in helping students attend tutorials more regularly and proactively.

How has this impacted your learning?
I think it's useful. It reminds me to look at HAC and check my grades to see if I need to finish anything or go to tutorials. I don't need the reminder as much anymore as I did in the beginning.
Would you change anything?
The form we fill out sends an email to us and to our parents. I don't need it though. I filled it out. So I guess I would change that.
Another teacher has students keep a paper tracker of their grades and goals. This form can be found below, and just shows another example of how students could track their grades each week.
