If a student is having emotional or social challenges that are keeping them from remaining in the classroom, I can visit with that student as a support service to the educational environment. Student referrals may come from the classroom teacher, principal, assistant principal, parent, etc.
Frisco ISD School Counselors do not work with students one-on-one in a therapy/clinical role. If parents would like more in-depth counseling or therapy, I can provide a list of resources, after the parent(s) sign a release form. However, Frisco ISD does not endorse or recommend any counselor(s), and we are not authorized to make such recommendations. Please contact me to obtain the most recent resource list from FISD.
There are many reasons why children are included in a group. Some children have been suggested for a group by a teacher, counselor, or parent. Other children would like to be in a group to help others in a similar situation. It can be comforting for a child to see that students their age have similar experiences, and he or she is not alone. Also, students can benefit from the reassurance they gain from being able to help others in similar circumstances.
There are various topics offered to K-5th grade students at Mooneyham based on needs. Small groups will be offered during the school day (Fall and Spring Semester) for about 30 minutes per session. These groups will meet 4-6 weeks with about 3 - 6 students in each group. Children will bring home a note on the first day of group, and any materials to share once group is over.
If you feel your child would benefit from small group guidance, complete the permission form and return it to your child's teacher. Thank you in advance for considering small groups for your child!
Small group topics are determined based on student's needs. Below are some possible topics:
1. Changing Families: For students experiencing a recent separation, divorce, or remarriage in their family.
2. My Friends & Me: Students gain better skills for healthy relationships with peers and adults.
3. Dealing with Feelings: Students determine healthy skills for dealing with big emotions.
4. Grief: Helping students through times of grief.
5. Super Star Social Skills: Students practice interactions and communication with peers and adults.
