Classroom guidance gives me a chance to meet with all Smith students in their classrooms! The elementary guidance program in Frisco I.S.D. is preventive in nature and is designed to promote students' academic success, personal/social development, and interpersonal effectiveness. Topics include identifying and managing feelings, anti-bullying, developing friendships, problem-solving skills, making healthy choices, appreciating diversity, and learning about career and educational opportunities. Lessons relate to children's "real world" experiences with emphasis on how to apply skills to everyday situations. The counseling newsletter provides parents with more detailed information regarding lesson topics, lesson plans, and how you can support these skills at home.
Elementary years set the foundation for everything that follows—academically, socially, and emotionally. School counselors partner with teachers and parents to help children develop skills like problem-solving, managing emotions, making friends, and building confidence.
Research shows that schools with strong counseling programs see:
Better Attendance & Engagement – Students in schools with comprehensive counseling programs have higher attendance rates and feel more connected to school.
Improved Behavior & Social Skills – Counselor-led programs can reduce discipline problems and increase positive peer interactions.
Stronger Academic Skills – Early support in organization, goal-setting, and perseverance leads to better learning outcomes over time.
By addressing challenges early, counselors help children feel safe, supported, and ready to learn—setting them on a path for success well beyond the elementary years.
