Language is rule goverened behavior defined as the comprehension of spoken, written or other commuication systems (AAC - augmentative and alternative communication , ASL - American Sign Language, etc). There are receptive (the way the languagen is received) and expressive ( the way the language is relayed) components of language. Listed below are activities and tips to use with your student.
Book reading
Focus on vocabulary your child may not know
Ask your child to retell the story
Have your child describe items in the story
Have your child recall 3-4 facts from the story
Ask them "wh-" questions about the story
Have your student predict what will happen next
Have them describe the setting, characters, etc.
Play games
Following directions, incorporate vocabulary, turn-taking
Engage your child in conversation
Ask them questions (Who, What, When, Where, Why)
Practice turn taking in the conversation
Maintaining a topic
Pretend play (request items, name items, etc.)
Go on walks and describe things you see
Ask “how” questions (e.g., How do you brush your teeth?)
Talk about how objects are same vs different (synonyms & antonyms) (e.g., bird vs plane)
Play games
Practice turn taking, conversational skills, requesting items, etc.
