A Survivor Speaks: The Role of Community in Supporting Survivors
Keynote: Anna Nasset, Owner, Stand Up Resources; Survivor
This session will take a unique and real look at the impact of stalking through storytelling. Anna Nasset will share her experiences of those who recognized she was in danger and those who did not, and the damage it caused. She will talk about the highlights and lowlights of her journey, including the role the community played in her experience, and identify the barriers and supports she encountered. Ms. Nasset will provide participants with doable actions and practical ideas to help them feel empowered to provide positive experiences for survivors, including tips for supporting survivor well-being and resilience.

Beyond the SART: Building Capacity and Community Relationships to Meet Survivor Needs

Stalking is a complex crime that intersects with the larger paradigm of violence. This session will help responders understand how biases and victims’ lived experiences can impact their safety, well-being, and needs. Jennifer will break down stalking dynamics for specific populations, provide tips and tools for supporting victims, and ideas for expanding community partnerships.

Elevating Victim's Voices through Community Response
Greg Bacon, Sergeant, Tempe, Arizona Police Department
This session will focus on how to utilize the efforts of a multidisciplinary team to build a community’s response to support and keep victims safe, while minimizing secondary trauma. Participants will learn practical tips and tools for appropriately supporting victims while maintaining open communication, regular check-ins, assessment of risk/safety and dialogue about next steps.

This session will offer our speakers an opportunity to talk about meeting victims where they are and what is needed to encourage, support and empower them to move beyond what has happened to them.

Now What? Being Resilient in Challenging Times
Dr. Jim Harris, Associate Director, WV Autism Training Center at MU
This session will discuss how we can exist in the real world with tough issues and problems and maintain a sense of resilience and hope. Dr. Harris will explore the toxic effects of stress on our health and mental functioning and also challenge common perceptions about what is needed to move from adversity to a place of hope and how, in that process, we can stay healthy and well. Participants will leave with information and daily practice examples that can have an immediate effect on their lives!

Applying What We Know about Trauma to Investigative Strategies
Greg Bacon, Sergeant, Tempe, Arizona
Implementing a trauma-informed investigation approach not only assists investigators to conduct thorough, detailed, and empathetic investigations, but increases the likelihood of victim engagement in the process and can significantly reduce the chances of additional trauma to victims. In this workshop, participants will gain an understanding of adversities and effects of trauma, from a law enforcement perspective, and how to apply that knowledge throughout investigations.
