FAQs about LPS

Academics

What is an AP Course?

Advanced Placement (AP) is a program run by the College Board that allows students to take courses that can earn college credit and/or qualify for more advanced classes in college.

LPS students are required to take two AP classes (US History, and US Government & Politics), but most LPSers elect to take additional AP classes in sciences, maths, English, psychology, and economics.

How does the workload compare to middle school?

It's more work, however, as long as you practice time management it's all very much doable. All LPS students have enough time to participate in sports/clubs, take on a part time job, etc.

Do LPS classes fulfill specific graduation requirements?

Yes. Beyond the English Language Arts and Social Studies requirements, specific LPS classes fulfill the Visual & Performing Arts, Financial Literacy, and 21st Century Life & Careers requirements for graduation.  See the Program of Study for specifics.

What world languages are offered at CNHS?

To graduate, students must take one year of a world language. Many elect to take more.  CNHS offers Spanish, Italian, and Latin (subject to change). CNHS also has an American Sign Language Club, but this does not fulfill the graduation requirement.

Extracurriculars & Athletics

When do clubs meet?

Clubs usually meet in the morning and during unit lunch. At times, they will host special events after school.

How do I get involved?

A club fair will be held at the beginning of the school year. You can join a club's Remind (a mobile messaging app) to receive updates about meetings and events. It's free to participate in extracurriculars, although some organizations may require an additional fee. Check out this page to learn more.

You could find more information about athletics and activities at this website.

General School Information

Can you describe the daily schedule?

Colts Neck High School operates on a rotating block schedule. Each day there will be five “blocks” (periods) that are 67 minutes long, as well as a 35-minute unit lunch period. The schedule consists of a seven-day cycle (A-G days), with students seeing only five of their seven classes each day. This means that two classes will be “dropped” each day.

What about technology?

All CNHS classes utilize Google Classroom. Additionally, many teachers and clubs ask students to join their Remind (a mobile messaging app). The Genesis Parent Portal is used to track attendance, grades, and schedules. All students receive a FRHSD email linked to Google Drive and Gmail.

How long is lunch?

Lunch is 35 minutes. The entire school has lunch at the same time, but there are plenty of tables reserved for freshmen.
