Ways Middle Schoolers Can Get Involved NOW
You do not have to wait until high school to start becoming part of the FTHS Cross Country and Track & Field program. Middle school is the perfect time to start building confidence, learning about the sport, and getting connected.
Here are ways middle school students can get involved now:
• Start running consistently a few days per week
You do not need to be fast right away. The biggest goal is to build the habit of running, staying active, and learning to enjoy the process.
• Join your middle school cross country or track team
If your school offers cross country or track, join the team. This is one of the best ways to learn the basics before high school.
• Attend FTHS meets when possible
Come watch a cross country or track meet. Seeing the team compete is a great way to understand the program and get excited about being part of it.
• Follow team updates
Stay informed about interest meetings, summer training, team events, and important announcements. See middle school Wednesdays below!
• Reach out with questions
Middle school athletes and families are encouraged to ask questions about the program, summer training, physical forms, expectations, and how to prepare for freshman year.
• Get friends involved
Cross country and track are more fun when you have teammates. Encourage friends to try it with you, even if they have never run before.
• Build healthy habits
Good sleep, consistent activity, hydration, and a positive attitude all matter. You do not need to train like a high school athlete yet, but you can start building the habits that help athletes succeed.
• Try different events
Track & Field has something for almost every type of athlete, including sprints, distance, jumps, throws, and relays. Cross Country is a great way to build toughness, endurance, and team pride.
Our goal is to make the transition from middle school to high school athletics easier, more exciting, and less intimidating. Whether you are already competitive, brand new to running, or just looking to try something new, there is a place for you in the FTHS program.
Middle School Wednesdays During the Summer — Cross Country
Middle School Wednesdays are summer sessions designed for future FTHS Cross Country athletes who want to get involved before entering high school.
These sessions are a great way for middle school runners to meet the coaches, learn what cross country is all about, and begin building confidence before freshman year.
No experience is required.
What athletes can expect:
• Easy group runs based on ability level
• Basic warm-up routines and running drills
• Guidance on how to safely build endurance
• Introduction to cross country training and racing
• A chance to meet future teammates
• Information about summer training and the fall season
• A positive, low-pressure environment
Who should attend?
ANY middle school student interested in running, joining cross country, or becoming part of the FTHS athletic community is encouraged to attend.
You do not need to be fast. You do not need prior experience. You just need a good attitude, a willingness to work, and an interest in being part of a team.
The goal of Middle School Wednesdays is to make the transition into high school cross country easier, more welcoming, and more exciting.
