Students will master reading, writing, and comparing decimals to the thousandths place, as well as rounding, adding, subtracting, and explaining such computation with decimals to the hundredths place.
Understanding that in a multi-digit number, each digit represents ten times what it represents in the place to the right and 1/10 what it represents in the place to the left will be developed in this unit, and revisited for mastery in Unit 7.
Ability to explain placement of decimal points and zeros when multiplying and dividing by powers of ten will be developed in this unit, and revisited for mastery in Unit 7.
Measurement conversions will be developed in this unit and revisited for mastery in Units 4 and 8.
Division will continue to be developed in this unit, and revisited for mastery in Units 4, 7, and 8.

The Standard Algorithm for multiplication will be introduced in the next unit. Please refrain from teaching this prior to its introduction, and encourage students to practice with learned strategies, as they will lead students into conceptual understanding of the algorithm and its efficiency.

A similar strategy to the standard algorithm for division (long division) will be introduced in the next unit. Please refrain from teaching this prior to its introduction, and encourage students to practice with learned strategies, as they will lead students into conceptual understanding of the algorithm and its efficiency.

Additional Games for Extra Practice

  • Making Change - Practice adding and subtracting decimals.

  • Monster School Bus - In this game, students visualize groupings of ten using whole numbers and decimals as they pick up children along a monster school bus route.

  • Battleship Numberline - Practice placing whole numbers, fractions, and/or decimals in the appropriate spot of a number line.

  • Matching Math: Metric Length - Practice converting amongst units in the metric system.

  • Measurement Mania - Practice metric conversions by placing quantities on a number line/tape measure.
