Big cities commonly have homeless individuals sleeping on the sidewalks and seeking help in shelters. Roanoke has had a visible struggle with finding resources for this population. In our own community, we rarely see someone sleeping in front of a business. Does that mean Franklin County doesn’t have a homelessness problem? If we don’t see it, is it there?
The truth is, we have a growing population of homeless families in our community. There are more than 200 people receiving help through the Shared Blessings organization. At least 20 of those are school aged children. We have people living in tents and waiting for homes. These numbers do not even include all of the homeless in our county. It is hard to know exactly how many people are without homes.
This leads us to the question, Who experiences homelessness in Franklin County, what do their lives look like, and what resources are available to help them?
